Not sure if this is the correct area of the board but I am looking for people who sew because I have a couple of questions.

Thanks

I do too, mostly costuming. Maybe between Emma and myself we can answer your questions.

Ok, growing up my mother had a sewing machine table where the sewing machine was mounted on a piece of wood that flips up and you could then lay the machine down into the table forming a normal flat topped table. In addition, when the machine was out, it was mounted flush with the table top.

I have been kicking around the idea of trying to get something similar. I have looked at some new sewing machines and really do not like the idea of the base (where you sit the material on) is so tall. Since I learned on a large flat sewing space, that is what I am used to and would prefer to stay with as much as possible.

So Question: Do they still make tables like this?

Thank you.

Yes they do. Here's an example of an inexpensive version of table where the machine sits in it: Arrow 98601 Sewing Machine Craft & Hobby Table 40x 20x 28" with Folding Steel Legs & Fully Assembled - Like Roberts 299

You can also find several other companies that make very expensive ones.

It sounds to me that what you have described is a regular sewing cabinet. It looked much like a large desk with drawers. If so, I bought mine at the Singer Store, but, to tell you the truth, I don't know that they have been made like that for quite a while. On the other hand, I have one, so I have not looked recently.

Casey - Thanks. That is more or less what I am looking for. Although I would like something a little nicer, starting out it will be perfect.

Lilicx - yes, it probably was a regular sewing cabinet. Only recently have I looked for one and since I'm completely new to it my searches were turning up nothing. But my mother's cabinet was probably bought in '68 or '69 so I was not sure if they still made them.

You could always have someone build you a table with an box / indention for your new machine to sit down in. It wouldn't fold up like your moms but it could easily be made to give you a similar sewing surface.

Other than that, you can find tons of the older machines for sale and in good condition. All you have to do is get them serviced! (I've got 2 of the older black singers. One was my mom's and one I purchased and had it serviced. I even had a new motor put on it.)

They don't have the fancy stitches but you can do things on those machines that I won't do with my new computerized one, either!

I have seen a nice sewing machine cabinet in our local Wal-Mart right after I spent my money on a counter top to go in my sewing room for the machine to sit on. For what I spent to have a frame built and on the counter top, I could have got that. I would love to have that cabinet that the machine sits down in. If my memory serves me right, it had drawers and was a really nice cabinet, a rather large one too. It was one of those that come in a box and you put it together yourself.
