It's not quite a consensus. Some of us think they have a moral, if definitely not legal, obligation to answer if it's not a Jehovah's Witness.

HUh? How do they have a moral or legal obligation to open their door to a total stranger??

I dare to wonder what else is immoral in your home. Thankfully, since you are a stranger to me, I'll never know.
Yeah, I have to say that is just way out there to say it's immoral not to answer your door to a stranger. Never heard such nonsense.

You absolutely have the right to ignore a stranger at your door, key word, stranger. Do people think crime doesn't happen in good neighborhoods too?

I don't answer the door for anyone unexpected. My friends know to call me first. All others need to make an appointment. I'm not unfriendly, but my time is my own to spend as I please. I don't appreciate intrusions.

I also dont like unexpected visits from strangers, I dont know you, I dont have to answer to you

knocking on doors in the middle of the day time is a very common thing thieves do before breaking in your house to make sure nobody is home

I only answer the door for deliveries like mailman, UPS, FedEx, etc

I can't think of a time when I have ever NOT answered the door. Maybe it is important? I've certainly never been invaded by a criminal after answering the door. If someone is that determined to attack me, all they have to do is wait for me to come out, or smash a window to get in.

As for sales people or Jehovah's witnesses, I get maybe one a year. It really isn't that inconvenient. Yes, if i was indisposed at the moment I wouldn't answer it.

In my neighborhood, people come to the door pretending to collect for charity or looking for a different address. If you don't answer the door, they break in, assuming you aren't home. So I think it is safer to open the door and let them know we ARE home.

People may have other things to do but be at your beck and call. You are the neighbor with 3 foot weeds and now it is pertinent that someone answers the door bell because you want something. I am sure you will see the neighbor in the yard, on the street or you ring the doorbell without knocking.
The proper way to return wrongly delivered mail is by putting it into back into the box with a note. Throwing a letter on your neighbor's doorstep is not the proper way. Do you know it it was time sensitive? Do you know if your neighbor checks his front door for mail when he has a mail box?
Put it back into my own mailbox? I dont think the mailman would realize that it is for him. As I mentioned there was no way to put it into theirs as there is no accessible opening on it.

I leave in the morning and get beck in the eveining, so I am not here to experience the invasion of solicitors. I stayed at home 2 weekdays and no one knocked on my door. In the mornings/evenings also no one knocked on my door. So it must be uncommon for solicitors to show up in my neighborhood.

In an apartment building it is different. If the bell rings from the outside door downstairs, and I'm not expecting anyone, I look out the window to see who it is, or simply ignore it. There are many bells and people aren't the smartest and ring the wrong bell sometimes, it happens.

However, if the bell rings from my apartment door meaning they are already inside the building, it is usually one of the other tenants wanting or needing something, most times I answer the door, unless I'm sleeping on the couch, then I won't.

I live on the 4th floor of a walk up, no one walks up all these stairs for no good reason, LOL.......
