One of the things that I found unusual when house hunting down south was the number of homes that seem to use their garages as "man cave porches". Touring the neighborhoods I would see men sitting in garages chatting, playing cards, watching tv and barbequing. Some of these garages also had large screen garage doors. An interesting use of space.
That's how my garage is...we use the pool table and exercise equipment in it daily and we ride 4 of our 6 bicycles several times a week...the only reason I have two extras is for guests. But my garage is where my husband and I hang out together.
when we looked at building a house we wanted a smaller home but I knew I needed a 3 car garage.
our third bay has a concrete tornado shelter and just enough room for my workbench, 2 motorcycles which I no longer ride and my tools.
I try very hard to park 2 of my 3 cars in the garage and put my storage junk all along the walls of the garage on shelfs. unfortunately, I don't have enough depth to park my honda accord in the garage and still walk around so it stays outside.
You guys have accumulated sooo much stuff, it is oftentimes obscene. It's just stuff though, junk really. Get rid of it. Sell it if you can, but what you cannot sell (which is 98% of it) needs to be trashed or recycled.
when we moved to a new house after 15 years in the old house, I threw away roughly 3 dumpsters worth of accumulated stuff and donated countless truckloads of stuff to thrift stores. Our new place is too small to keep much of the junk and I try to shop at thrift stores now because I see the waste in buying new.
We combined two households when my husband and I moved into our current home with my mother...its a big house with a lot of garage space (3+)...we can't fit one car in there...I dread moving again because this time we are going to be drastically downsizing(5000sq.-2500)...we have enough combined Christmas decorations to put the Griswald's to shame...it's true we have almost 100k of cars sitting out in the Florida sun while I house Frosty and his friends...
In our garage: 2 cars, trash and recycle wheelie bins, power tools, lawn and garden supplies, some sporting/camping equipment (on shelves), an extra fridge. It's a small 2 car garage in my opinion - everything has to fit just-so in order for it to work. But it gets cold and snowy in the winter and I'll be darned if I'm going to warm the car and scrape the ice off before going to work in the winter just so I can store crap in there.

I can't say enough good things about SafeRacks. Costco often has them on sale for a good price. I don't have a basement so it is nice to make use of the large empty overhead garage space. I love that I can hang my bike from them too.
Three bikes plus some garden tools, all of which hang out of the way, because the hell I'm parking my new car outside! The basement is another story.
