My previous post in the main TX forums //www.city-data.com/forum/texas...ate-clean.html

Me and my wife are looking at areas in houston, however, we are not very sure which areas are "ok" to live in

We are lower income (20k yearly) so we can't do too much but we still would like to find a area somewhat family safe.

I do a lot of IT work so it would be plus to live near that trade area (if there is one).

You're going to be hard-pressed to find safe, ghetto areas in Houston with little to no crime issues.

There are low income (income restricted) apartment buildings all over the city. If you meet the requirements (which you do) you can get a pretty nice apartment for very little money. Houston is HUGE so you would need to narrow down your area in order for anyone to help you.

East Side. Most of those old school Mexican neighborhoods are pretty safe as long as you aren't involved in gangs/drugs. Also, the elementary schools (Carrillo, Gallegos) are very good. Unfortunately, once your kids get to Edison middle and Milby high, not so much.

Well, I wouldn't really consider those low income.

The Spring Branch area isn't ideal in terms of crime, but it does seem to be on a bit of an upswing. It is very close to the Galleria and the Energy Corridor, and reasonably close to Downtown and the Medical Center. It is also close to Memorial Park and Terry Hershey Park, both of which provide some of the best free recreational opportunities in the city.

There are some very nice neighborhoods behind the apartments, so it is an area that you could grow into. And while the Spring Branch ISD schools south of I-10 are clearly more desirable, it is a good district. I would take my chances with the Spring Branch schools north of I-10 over the sketchier Houston ISD options any day.

Again, not being rude at all- but no one is taking into account this family's net monthly income is $1560ish. Helpful suggestions would be giving neighborhood names where they can rent for $450-550/mo, leaving $1,000 per month to cover all bills, food, car expenses, kids expenses, etc. If it is out from the city (ie, Spring), it would be helpful to provide estimated commuter expenses into Houston (tolls,'monthly gas, etc) as a long commute takes a big chunk of the $1000 left to spend.

OP x-posted on TX forum, too, and no one seems to realize Plano or McKinney or Spring probably aren't great recommendations for a family this cash-strapped.

So why didn't you take the time to do all of those things you are telling other people to do instead of teaching people how to post. I don't think you're post is any more helpful than the others.

houston IS a good place for someone who has a low income. rent is cheap and jobs are plentiful. I can't really answer the OP's question, but I think they will do well in Houston. I always have!

It appears to me that everyone who has responded to this post so far actually has considered the limited budget this family is dealing with. I don't see a single recommendation of a place associated with high commuter costs, such as Spring (Spring Branch is a section of Houston 77055/77080). If you believe that this family is receiving bad advice in another post, in another forum, then I suggest that you air your concerns there. In civil discourse, it is not helpful to accuse people of doing something that they are not.
