Is Houston becoming less car dependant, or trying. Is there mass transit becoming good or is the city becoming more dense so residents could have a shorter commute. Are their metro's refineries shutting down or polluting less. I am just wondering , due to Houston's reputation for pollution, if they are in the process of cleaning up their air or creating more transit options.

Expanded mass transit will indeed help. The University Line will open (2012, tentatively - just five years away) stretching from UH to Hillcroft running parallel to 59 most of the way (Westpark?).

The industry is there, and the east side (with the port and everything) will never be free of pollution. Having a cleaner way to get around definitely helps though.

so far I can see that some companies prefer to be outside the beltway loop.

Most of the petrochemical plants, refineries etc. are along the ship channel, Pasadena, Deer Park etc. although the Port of Houston is actually in the Inner Loop.
