First off, welcome to Texas! I'm just curious what you are leaving Monterey for Katy for so that we can help you a little more. Katy is quite a big change. My boyfriend's family has lived in Monterey for more than 20 years and seen the cost rise, so if that's what you're leaving for I can totally understand. (However, my boyfriend also doesn't seem to understand that nowhere else in this country has such a pleasantly cool climate.) Monterey is a charming little town though, and luckily I get to visit every winter. I'm sure you will miss the marine life, beach, and the amazing California produce at the farmer's market (It was the first time I ever saw orange oil drip off from an orange. So fresh!) Let us know some more info about what you are seeking so we can help.

There is a lot to love about Monterey, but economically you are probably a lot better off in Katy.

-------------------Monterey, CA--------Katy, TX

Cost of living -----110.9----------------92.5
Median income----$55,835------------$64,757

Detached House
Median value.......$879,094-----------$168,169

Median gross rent---$1,392-----------$1,045

Crime rate-------------308.3------------229.0

Unemployment--------3.6%-----------6.5%

Poverty----------------9.5%----------11.5%

The weather is going to take some getting used to.

After about the 10th page of posts you'll realize that general consensus is that Katy is more conservative than Houston proper.
That's an understatement. I would not deter any family from moving from expensive CA to suburban Texas because it is a rather sensible thing to do if you can afford it, but I will have to introduce some caveats to all the Katy praising.

The pros are that it's cheap, it's relatively nice and pretty (cookie cutter), it's friendly (for the most part) and a very decent place to raise kids. It has some good places to eat too. It's an all around nice place to live and I am glad my parents are there because I like the thought of them being in a safe tucked away part of the city. It brings comfort, peace and a steady state of mind. For those things I am grateful for Katy.

Cons are the culture shock you might experience from CA to TX. Katy is one of the more reactionary towns in Houston. If politics doesn't concern you then you will be fine, but just be prepared for some very bold statements; everything from secessionist talk, crude anti-Obama rhetoric, mild to overt racism, and strong Christian traditional culture. But that is neither here nor there if all you're looking for is a nice place to raise a family.

Another con and I cannot stress this enough is the weather. Hot and humid! I mean drenched shirt hot. I mean if you don't have AC be prepared to suffer a long summer hot. Unbearable heat that is characteristic of Houston but for some reason feels hotter in Katy, I could be wrong. The heat is terrible.

All in all, I understand the pros may outweigh the cons for your family, so go for it. I mean Monterrey is probably one of the most BEAUTIFUL places in the country much less the State of CA. I mean you're not moving to an aesthetically pleasing city at all. Houston and Katy for that matter are not gorgeous or even in the same playing field as the Central Coast of CA. But what Houston and even Katy lack in aesthetic beauty they make up for in spades; low cost of living, money goes way further, access to world class amenities, ample jobs, and the strongest selling point of all; practical living. Houston/Katy is perhaps the most practical major metro area to live in the US.

He will have good luck. Katy is a wonderful place to live. Too bad, people like you - turn threads like this into 50 pages of bashing Katy. If I did not know better, I would think you have a secret desire to live in Katy. But would be embarrassed by what your Yuppie Friends would think....

To them moving to Katy means giving up on life.

No, I'm pretty sure he just hates all suburbs in general. And actually he's in Austin and seems to hate Houston in general, according to a bunch of his posts.
Austitude

Anyway...

OP said they've already researched Katy, but are looking for more specific info from locals. Sounds like OP is already aware it will be a change and knows of the more general, obvious differences.

Look I may have off as an inner loop snob in past posts, but I don't think anything begins to compare to the ridiculousness of Austintude. That to me is ten times more deplorable than any inner loop snob.

Austinites hate all of Houston, without question and without regard. It's a very insane mindset. Nine times out of ten they've never been all around Houston, these kids grew up in Spring, Katy, Sugar Land or Tomball and went away for college in Austin and came back raving about it and how stupid Houston is without ever venturing past their suburban bubbles. Houston is ten times the city Austin is. I cannot even believe just how insular Austinites could be comparing their small city to major metropolis?
