"Overshadows", That's a bit dramatic don't you think ? What is it exactly that Houston is supposed to do ? What kind of song and dance are we supposed to perform? Trying to get the same media from the same locations to somehow change their opinion of our city is like banging your head against the wall, it will get you nowhere and just cause more frustration. I and other posters have said it a hundred times, if you can't get something done right "do it yourself", that is the only option I can see, other than just going along the way things are (which aint all that bad) and eventually they will get tired of the same tired places and bs story lines.

You're exaggerating a lil bit there, bro...

well its the truth. Houston needs to do something about its exposure

I was hoping when that ATL movie with T.I. came out, that Houston would make a similar movie showcasing Houston's hoods. I mean, Jason's Lyric was good, but we need a more updated view of Houston.

From what I know of Houston and those who live there, which is very little since I have only visited and never lived there.
The people that I have encountered do not feel the need to live their lives in front of others.
They seem to like their private lives to remain private and have no need to draw unnecessary attention to themselves, family, friends or city.
I admire that part of Houston and those who live there, it is a beautiful city and has one of my favorite restaurant there.

He's really not and if Houstonians are honest, they would admit that Dallas indeed has a MUCH higher national profile in pop culture. nothing in Houston resonates like the Cowboys, the Dallas tv series, etc. Also, film commissions in both Austin and Dallas have outworked Houston's. The Astrodome studio proposal would have been a game changer but as usual, Houston blew it.

No zoning is what makes Houston truly unique & the city should capitalize on the weird factor of it IMO. Austin has nothing on Houston in that regard. I know this has been done with the beer can house & what not, but lets broaden the picture just a little.
Wow, what an exaggeration.

A few cities may do an art car parade, but hardly around the world. A few in the US and a few in Europe.

Chopped and Screwed Music had its peak around 2004-2005 and then faded back into obscurity. Wheres Paul Wall? Mike Jones? Bun B tries to stay relevant, but he's hardly a headliner outside of Texas. And outside the South, he's a nobody. Drake, an outsider, has put Houston on the map a few times but thats it.

Only major worldwide superstar to come out of Houston, thats still relevant today, is Beyonce.

Houston HELPED put man on the moon. Apollo 11 didn't even take off in Houston.

No zoning is nothing too spectacular. Its easy to use. And that about where the positives end. It makes people drive, walking becomes an issue, its UGLY as all get out, and it turns cohesive neighborhoods to random dilapidated strings of strip malls and parking lots.

The real question is...

Does Houston care about the lack of exposure?

BFD. In the big scheme of things, having a high national profile in "pop culture" is, IMO, pretty low on the list of important things in life. In fact, I'd rank it at the bottom, considering the trash that comprises modern day "pop culture". So what you are saying is that we should aspire to keep up a little harder with the kardashians?? Thanks, but no thanks.

Many contributions from Houston appear in TV and movies today. Just look at the breasts of most women in TV and film.

We were also among the pioneers with that artificial heart thing. But store bought boobs have influenced pop culture.

With that said, this is a silly thread.
