If you want to get a house will not find anything in the $200s if you want a town home you might find a few but they will be close to the geto. Now if you want a house there are a few nice areas on the south west side just outside the loop check out Willowbend Westbury & Maplewood

Nice, pretty, and clean, or are you willing to live in an area a little rough around the edges?

$200k in nice, pretty, and clean is a very tall order for inside the loop. However, if you are handy and have an interest in older homes and more diverse areas, then that opens up more possibilities for you.

You can get a townhome 2/2 in Midtown or Rice Military or look at the NW area inside the loop. There are not many but they are out there. Check har.com.

Town home would be ok, as long as it had a small yard, for our dogs. I do like the Rice Military area.

Hi,
I'd like to follow-up and ask a similar question on this thread if I may, very similar so I hope the OP doesn't mind. We are looking at areas such as Sugar Land and Katy, there are houses around the $200k (some even lower around the $170k), I am not in Houston so I cannot drive through the areas...are these safe and decent areas with good schools (have young children so schools are important)? Can you really get a nice, 2000+ sq ft home for that kind of money (we've been looking on HAR and Realtor.com)...or is there some catch? We are in the Pac NW and have been trying to move to Texas for a bit now, and find it hard to imagine the price for the home because something similar here would cost $400k plus...
Thank you

Type in zip code 77006 (Midtown) in that www.har.com site and you will find a number of townhomes 2/2 well under 200k. That is where a lot of 20 somethings live. Dog park being built nearby. It is not in a ghetto, but it is a diverse area.

As for justwait, no catches in Katy or SL, Houston has very affordable housing for a major city (its the 3% property tax that bites). I got twice the space for same price as when I was in Chicago.
