Can't believe it's been almost a year since Irma. She was a wild ride from the beginning.

Insurance companies won't ever be "optimistic". They'll make up reasons to raise your rates. I think back in 2015 or 2016, after a decade of no hurricanes in FL, insurance companies still increased their bills.

Then maybe we will get a September surprise. There is still 3 months to go. I may get rain here in TN from them but never will the eyes cross over me like the three that did in 2004.

26th Anniversary of Cat5 Hurricane Andrew hitting S FL just South of Miami. No Cat5 has hit the US since and one of only 3 known to have ever hit the US.

That's also an anniversary of a visit from my son who fled Miami for safety defying orders. When he returned his hotel had been leveled. Even a Cat 1 needs to be taken seriously as flooding and powerlines don't mix well. The high winds are only a part of the threat. In my like time I've ridden 4 out well inland on the highest ground FL could provide and only post winds there was a threat.

24Aug18 pm Tropics update:
Atlantic: All quiet again, but model guidance suggest uptick in tropical waves rolling off of Africa into the Atlantic as we go into September (traditional peak of hurricane season):

East Pacific: 2 disturbances, all well offshore but we'll again watch if they develop as they head into the Central Pacific, so Hawaii will watch if they develop or not. One at 0-10% chance, other 50% chance of development but for now just some scattered showers.

Today marks the one year anniversary of Harvey's landfall near Rockport, TX that would later go on to break the all-time US Tropical system rainfall record at 60.58in, and 30th in the world.

The Atlantic SST's (Sea Surface Temperature) have warmed quite a bit across the Atlantic recently after starting the season off below normal. Tropical systems need around 26 degrees Celsius (78F) to form (they can last over colder temps and weaken as they go but to form initially without help form other weather systems need those temps or higher typically).

You need about 28.5C+ for Cat 3's or higher typically (again, just the water temp ingredient, other nearby weather systems can also influence strength but water temp is a major player and yes every degree matters to a hurricane).
