I don't see how they can meet earnings with the economy essentially shut down for 3 months.

Whoa whoa, cool down. That's in July, it's only May. And yes, businesses have started opening this month so by July, they probably would exceed earnings that were set for supposedly April-June closure of businesses when in reality they were open in May and June.

expectations are very low now for earnings ... all they need to do is less bad ... layoffs add lots to the bottom lines as well as dividend cuts

retained earnings can buy other companies , gain market share , introduce other products which generate more profit , acquisitions . all can improve the bottom line

it could effect q2 ... there are companies that cut dividends and may have already done the things i mentioned .
