Some of the comments are unbelievable. What ever happened to personal integrity? Lying about prior job history and academics speaks volumes about the character of an employee.
Degrees and college attendance can be validated online by anyone with a credit card. The ability to validate (school history - where, what dates and degrees) has been around since early 2000. So if you think you're gaming the system by falsifying information on your resume and job application, you're in for a big surprise. You can be fired on the spot for falsifying information on a job application (read the fine print!). Why risk your personal reputation with lying to potential employer?
I have personal integrity but I wish I didn't and could lie. My inability to lie has kept me from having a job for over 5 years out of college. I don't think it's right that people lie but they do get away with it. You may think that something will happen to their job as a result but people can do anything if they're clever enough. Some people can even cheat their way out of a drug test.

thought the reason you couldn't get a job was because you came up with excused for everything and didn't just get the job done
I hired one guy where his resume was a complete fabrication. He didn't know how to do the most rudimentary tasks.
See even you hired the liar. The key is to GET HIRED! Every thing after that is irrelevent. Even getting fired for lying is collateral damage. You just move on to the next job opportunity, and you lie to get that. You have to lie to get hired. I'm finally learning that, and will surely exaggerate my skills in my upcoming two interviews this week. If they ask whether I'm an empowered official, I will say yes (even though I wasn't but who cares). If I say I wasn't an empowered official I am immediately out as a candidate. If I say I was, the interview continues and my chance at getting the job.
Lie, lie, lie, exaggerate. You have to do it. The job market is too tough not to do it.
You can't fake degrees but you can make up fake businesses and use them that relates with your skills and experience.
Actually you can fake degrees. Nobody cares about degrees, nobody checks. And if they do check and you get fired, meh. On to the next opportunity. I have three useless degrees (real ones) and never EVER had to send transcripts or anything related to the degrees to any job I ever had.
If someone asked me about this for my 2006 job, seriously, I would just laugh in their face. Not only are they calling me a liar, but they're paranoid. This is not an employer I would ever work for.
Many companies are nosy about your employment history. They want to check to make sure that you have actually worked at that job. The last thing they want is to fire you because you said skills that you didn't have. And hiring mistakes cost a lot of money and they lose the time and money they invest in you.
People lie all the time especially in interviews and on paper from my experience as a hiring manager. Fact checking and calling prior job for reference check is the way to go for hiring managers, that's when the real truth comes out.

What job? I never had one since high school but I'm sure I would if I was a liar.
