I think I see your point - RRR, he should buy a camper in the winter when they are cheapest.

I wonder if he'd have any luck going on craiglist and renting a spot from an individual. The challenge would be dumping the tanks. Can this go into the cleanout of a septic system??

Another cheap option is going for a sublease on a student's room during the summer season. But that would require a long commute or looking for grunt work in Knoxville

Hmmm... someone on CL has trailers for rent in sevierville - $180 - 200 mo. Electric included. You have to go to the bathouse for facilities.

I don't think you have done much research, yet, because the unemployment rate is much lower in Knoxville. Also, there are tv production studios. I know that Jewelry TV doesn't pay well so they love hiring people with little to no experience. From there you might be able to move onto Scripps/Howard. There are a surprising number of jobs due to HGTV/Food TV/Jewelry TV/Cooking Channel/DIY and more.

Stay out of Sevierville. You will probably only find tourist trap jobs.

You will want to be in the West Knoxville area so the closest campground will be The Soaring Eagle in Lenoir. We stayed there until we could find an apartment, but that was in the boom days of 2005. SOARING EAGLE CAMPGROUND AND RV PARK

Call them and see, but I wonder if they could meet that $300 price. Check, though.

You will probably be better off to find a room to rent through CL and applying for jobs as soon as possible. Move when you have the job.

And I don't think you are going to be able to afford a mobile home for the money that you have.

I can't seem to find the listing. Could you help me with a link? Thanks!

And everyone, thankyou so much for all the feedback and help! I've learned a lot and got some great info here! I'm looking into that CL listing for the trailer for rent in sevierville... also considering getting a cheap RV right away if I can find an affordable rv park near knoxville.. gonna call that Soaring Eagle Campground in the morning! I also found this place... http://www.lazyacres-rvpark.com/index.html which says they have monthly rates for 299.99! It didn't have much other info on the site so I'm calling them in the morning too.

I might have run into a good deal on an old rv for $1,000 in my area. It's old, I'd have to give it a tune up and put new tires on it but it just might do the trick!

Wouldn't a trailer be better because you could unhook it and just drive around in your truck? Or would you tow an economy car behind the RV?

If you look on the RV thread in this forum, they talk about RV repairs being expensive and they can immobilize you. plus deprive you of a home while your RV is in the shop.

I'd be towing my car behind the RV. If I got a trailer I would have no way to tow it with my puny car.

I saw the RV today and while the engine did run and sounded strong when I saw it, it was not drivable. The mechanic who works at the storage lot it's being kept at is going to take care of all the repairs it needs to be drivable for $500.

So that comes to $1,500... a big chunk of my savings but if it works out it could save my butt. I'm not leaving for 2 months so I could potentially replace 2/3 of that money if I sell some stuff and save a majority of my remaining paychecks.

Then it would be a matter of me getting it to the RV Park in TN and I'll be pretty much set.

Sounds like a good plan. The little car will be good for commuting.

Thanks creeksitter! I'm so stressed out right now it's nice to hear some encouraging reassurance! I'm going to see if I can drive down to Knoxville early in January to job hunt.

Sounds like you're well on your way to making your plan work. Look at it this way, you now have a 'home' that no one can take from you
Good luck.
