I will be a Vegas resident next year, not a tourist, and I'll be paying my property taxes, sales taxes, and probably a fair amount of money added to the local economy on the Strip lol. One of the biggest appeals to me of the Strip is not just the great entertainment, but the fact that if I live in a condo there, I don't have to deal with a bunch of kids living there. First, not everyone wants to "raise a family," plenty of people are content not having little nose miners and wasting their time on that crap. Those people can just as easily work at casinos, too. And it's not that difficult for people to work there for a while, when they're young, then go find a more suitable state for them to "raise a family." I suggest Portland, it's incredibly boring and I think most people would find it ideal for boring activities like raising kids. For those of us who actually want to lead exciting lives free of such nonsense, though, then yes Las Vegas is a great city.

Also, I suggest learning more about your native city, because as awesome as it is that your family tree goes so long back, and that is awesome, in the same city, you seem to have a misunderstanding that Las Vegas was ever anything but a city catering to people who wanted otherwise forbidden entertainment options. After the whole mining rush ended, the population almost completely dried up. It managed to grow so fast because it took everything that California made illegal and made it legal instead. That was the reason for the rise of this great city. So the idea that the Strip is something recent and before that it was just a family town is wrong. Ever since Vegas has been a booming city, which was only the early 1900s when growth started taking off, it has been exactly for the reasons it remains the #1 U.S. tourist city today. So it would help to check your history before you claim to know more than the dumb tourists
Hmm, you obviously didn't inherit your views on raising children. Too bad your mom didn't think the same way.

Dave, it really boils down to your gut feelings about your family. Many move to Vegas to avoid bad winter weather (or the law). We moved here from SoCal 15 years ago for good jobs. I have never felt at home here for the reasons you list plus a few. We bought our current home with 30% down in 2003. We have poured all our free time and expendable income into our house. Now almost retirement age, we need to move back to take care of my elderly parents who cannot move here. Our house is 35% underwater (better than the 60% of most in LV) and we now must short sell. It breaks our hearts, but money and things are not what is important in life. We'll be starting all over at age 63. Next stop, the c-d short sale forums.

Good luck with the ss forums...I was there and commented a couple times and regretted it. Basically they are informative to read, but be careful there are a lot of moral cops over there! Good luck on starting over! Where are you relocating to? SoCal?

I used to live in Orlando too, I did the Disney College Program. Even though Disney pays crap, I really miss it from a social standpoint, and I'm considering heading back. But I think both UCF and UNLV have great hospitality programs! I wouldn't look forward to central Florida's humidity though.

I'm glad you gave it a good ole "college try". I think, for the most part the bad that you see is extremely relative to where you were from.

Being from SoCal, this always makes me laugh when someone in Vegas complains about the traffic. But that's because I come from THE place of traffic congestion! When you can't go 20 miles in less than 2 hours because of literally being stopped on a freeway... then you can talk about traffic congestion. Here it's just a teensy bit slow sometimes... and usually for about half a second and for only a few miles. You don't even actually stop on the freeway here! hehehe

The longest red lights I have EVER seen
See also above, there's been some investigations in some cities in SoCal about this very thing because the cities have actually planned stop lights to be longer in certain areas.

Terrible drivers
no argument there! LOL! I think the worst drivers of every city come to drive here... but it's also because it's a 24/7 town and people are drinking, partying and not sleeping as much as anywhere else.

Finding a job (actually finding a job is easy, whats hard is finding a steady full time job that pays well)
This is the economy of a tourist based city. Our business is doing quite well, even in this economy, but that's because it's a business that has nothing to do with location. We could literally live anywhere and still do our business. Most people right now, aren't so lucky.

Lack of a real downtown (I feel like Downtown LV isnt a real downtown business district, sure Fremont Street is ok, but theres no real tall office buildings, or big museums or performing arts centers, its just an old Strip IMO)
This is something hard to get used to when you're used to big business buildings downtown. But for me it makes it feel more like a "small town". LOL!

Quote:
The astronomical registration fees for cars

The astronomical car insurance
both of mine went down tremendously after moving here from LA. That and the housing costs are the main reasons we moved here!

Quote:
The lousy public education system
No argument here either, but I homeschool so it doesn't affect me or my kids. LOL! I do have to say, that NV has one of the best homeschool laws in the country.... probably because of the lousy public education system though.

The lack of a pro sports team
This is weird!

I agree with the person who said you should move sooner than later. If you're missing your family as much as you say you are, getting into a lease and prolonging the move will only make things harder, not easier!

Good luck to you whatever you do decide!
