I bet a majority of people here would unwittingly choose the latter, and not even realize it.
Where would you go if you wanted to risk being caught to rob someone's house/apartment? I know I wouldn't risk it for some ghetto area. I would go straight to the "safe" fancy neighborhoods.

What are those people doing when it rains like it has been?

Summerlin neighborhoods appear to be the safest.

That's not a very good way of thinking for these burglars. Many people in good hoods have disposable income that they spend on firearms and would love to usem on the idiot that wants to come in to the house the steal the things they gathered with their hard earned money.

For example my security is set up to let me know an intruder is present without them knowing I know. So I get an alert. I go sit at the entrance to the triggered zone and bam I expend 2 calories worth of trigger effort and pity the fool.

I moved to what was supposed to be a 'safe' neighborhood in North West/ Centennial Hills area and got my home burglarized + a few months ago had SWAT down the street. Meanwhile, when I was living in the 'Eastside' I never had any issues and was saving tons of money.

The schools are much better though in the 'safe' neighborhood. However, if you're in a 'bad neighborhood' you could always look into charter/ magnet schools and just workout the transportation.

You must have gotten a great job, with not so great compensation if you can't afford $800 rent, dude. Of course, you may have other bills, but that's none of my business; however, $500 a month? I don't even have to know where you live to know you're living in crackhead alley, one of many in a mile around the Vegas strip.

Lots o' thread drift in here. To the OP's original point, chances are, if you've looked for an apartment in a better neighborhood at your price point, and can't find one, well, there's your answer. $500 is very cheap, even for Vegas. Finding something on your own for that money is likely only to happen in somewhat marginal areas, which is what you seem to have now.

You can try going the roommate route, and looking for someone with a room to rent in one of the better areas. But then you have to deal with living with strangers.

One other question, do you have a car? This vastly influences where you're be looking.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure poor people own guns too and like to use them.
