When I'm in Vegas in the casinos when they're hopping on a Friday or Saturday night. It's not senior citizens I see at the tables and slots. I think the clubs are teaching the youngins to like the casinos, and gets them in there and playing. Note that a lot of clubs that are not attached to casinos seem to have gone belly up.

And then there are things that do not appeal to the younger generation like shows, comedy acts, table games, video poker, high limit rooms and a live pirate show. Some of the stuff that the younger generation will blow their money on I find ridiculous but it is their money so... You are right about gambling still being a big deal here in town but that is until the last baby boomer dies off, then what? Just look at how easy it is for the younger generation to blow $$$.

The point is that the casinos are making more off of the things (Cumulatively) that used to be cheap to draw in the gamblers...people aren't gambling as much but are willing to pay for food/entertainment...they want something for their money.

These other places are all about the gambling...Las Vegas has diversified...it's still Casino-centric but diversified.

The big gambles may like hitting those other spots but they still like Sin City for the OTHER stuff it offers.

As a tourist destination, not so much.

Macau, on the other hand...
I just wish we had a nicer airport in Vegas.

They are popping up new casinos in California every now and then...not good for Vegas.
Vegas has to transform itself to provide more entertainment or something else.

McCarran really isn't bad, especially the new terminal. On one of my last few trips, I flew Virgin America into Terminal C, and was fairly impressed. This was after flying out of JFK Terminal 4, which was a construction nightmare at the time. At least at McCarran, they didn't make anyone use Terminal C while they were building it.

The one thing that McCarran needs to get a better handle on is the security line chaos in Terminal B.

Generally speaking, gaming popping up around the country hasn't hurt Vegas. It just whetted the appetite of a lot of people who hadn't experienced before, and got them thinking about gaming vacations, of which Vegas is the prime destination. And things like Harrah's introduction of multiproperty comp system helps this (earn your comps near home, and use them in Vegas.) I know people give Gary Loveman a lot of crap (much of it well deserved.) But this was his idea, and it was a good one.

However Cali may be a different story. LV was LA's "local gaming" for a long time, so having casinos between LA and LV could hurt the business in LV.

It HAS transformed itself...from mainly gambling to mainly entertainment!

I can't tell you what a majority of tourists I drove in my cab that all said they don't really gamble but they just love the sights, sounds, ambiance, shopping, events, clubs, weddings, food etc.. I commonly heard that they have some sort of casino where they were from but it just wasn't the same...

It's the experience they all seem to agree on...

There isn't much I like about Las Vegas. But McCarran is one thing that I do. Most cities have their airport out in the hinterlands, at least 30 miles from the city center. Not here.

And although I think it's only a matter of time before an airplane has a catastrophic failure on approach or take-off (and wipes out a block of Paradise Blvd or Sunset Ave), it's awfully convenient to have the airport in the middle of town.

^^^ As with many places including LV, the airports ARE out a ways but people build up around them until they pick up their toys and move farther out if they can.

McCarran is really not at all out of the way. It's the closest main airport I've seen to the actual destination area of a major city. Of course, when it was first built, downtown Vegas was a good distance away. Then the strip sprang up much closer.

At some point, it might make sense to close McCarran, and move the airport further out, to expand the strip, but that would be way out into the future (although the county/state should be thinking about it now.)
