We're a tourist town. Why would we need a downtown? Hospitality IS our industry. We're not like other cities, and, for many of us, that's a good thing. If I wanted a downtown full of office buildings, I'd move to Boston again.

I go to LA on a regular basis to see friends who are on tour, and may not be stopping in Las Vegas. And I'm here because the same house in Los Angeles would cost me $750,000, with exorbitant taxes on top of that, and crappy weather. Why would I want that?

We are a unique city. We don't need a downtown, zoo, or aquarium. And I've already expounded on the non-gaming activities that are plentiful, and can be enjoyed by all. If you CHOOSE not to see anything but negative, that is all you will see.
Raiderman I don't just see negative but I believe Las Vegas is not a place for my family. Again comparing me living experiences from multiple parts of the US Las Vegas ranks the lowest overall. There are some good things about Las Vegas; I do work with some really great people and do enjoy tourist that is why I work in the tourist industry. But to have nothing else outside of that tourist area for the almost 2 million locals in the area is shocking. As I mentioned all those things we don't have and all other large cities with populations our size do have...because people want diversity in their outings. People want to travel to different parts of the city and experience different neighborhoods with different people...Las Vegas is one big suburb with all areas built the same and looking the same, there is no diversity here. There are very few non-gaming places to visit that have much interest.

People who believe hiking and biking is plentiful around here need to go visit states that have hiking and biking with scenery that is amazing. If you like to hike/bike through different parts of the area you are still going to notice something similar to all hiking/biking in the area its called the desert. People that believe Red Rock is so beautiful again need to get out of the area and see real beauty.

Las Vegas might be right for you it obviously is for some people but I think as time goes on people will be moving out more than moving in. If you add in the ever changing gaming industry now with major casinos going up all over the country Las Vegas will someday not be the same. You can already see that in casinos bankruptcies and gaming revenue.

It is certainly a lot cheaper to live here than where we came from. Groceries, gas, electricity, clothing, you name it it is all about half price. We also find it very easy to get around, even withstanding the dreadful driving I see here on a daily basis.

Now all of that is nice, but the one inescapable truth of living here is that every day here feels like a Tuesday. Variety is sparse, and although we keep ourselves moderately occupied it is already feeling a bit old - and that is only after 5 months or so.

It took a while for us both to find good jobs (4 months for my wife, 5 for me), so hopefully now that we are both working we will find a nice routine that will make living here seem a bit more interesting.

We plan on taking advantage of the cheap living here for a few years, then either head to Florida or back to Australia.
Very good way of saying it...everyday here does feel like a Tuesday. Variety is sparse. We have been here for about 10 months and the boredom is at times overwhelming. The Strip was interesting for the first month or so but then you see it all and realize it is all about the same. My wife and I both have good jobs but the pay is moderately lower than areas we previously lived in. Yes cost of living is a little cheaper than where we came from but the lower pay equals that out.

We will be moving as soon as we can, hopefully next month.

3 months of extreme weather won't kill you. You get about 4 months straight of 100+ temps out here, which is just as irritating.

From my experience with both, I can wear layers to keep warm when its 20 degrees. I cant take off my skin when its 110.

I'm genuinely interested in why someone would live in a place they dislike so much and strongly feel other other cities are better? OP I applaud you for making the decision to leave vs. staying and being miserable, the rest of you why do you stay, and it seems like many of you have been here for years.

Trust me, I'm speaking from first hand experience; the city I was born and raised in, a beautiful city (SLC) with great outdoor activities, four seasons, family etc. just wasn't for me so I moved. Later in life I landed in a city that again, wasn't for me so I moved. I didn't sit on a message board and ***** about it and tell everyone how horrible it was and rant against people who liked it there and challenge every reason that they liked it just because we didn't share the same viewpoint as mine, I got off my ass and did something about it.

So here's my question, why do you stay?

As I said we are planning on moving as early as next month. As I will say further this is a forum where people discuss many things about Las Vegas. As the OP said and as I have noticed there seems to be a lot of pro-moving to Las Vegas messages on the forum. I think people should have the whole picture prior to moving here. The truth as I have said Las Vegas isn't a normal city, far from it and people should be prepared for what they are getting themselves into if they plan on moving here. But please there is no need to attack others. It's one thing if you disagree or attack others based on facts another thing when you are trying to point out something you have no clue on. You and I have no knowledge of why people stay here if they don't like it...some may be unable to afford to move or have other reasons. Again we don't know.

We're not in charge of changing other people so we can be happy. That's codependency. No one is wrong for the way they choose to live their own life. It's about their own personal journey and not others. What is right for one person may not be right for all.

What we can do is be good role models and let others get there for themselves. If someone is miserable than those lessons are theirs to learn for themselves and theirs alone. They weave the web of their own misery and create the story of their sad life for themselves. People reap the seeds they sow. They have to save themselves.

If your heart is closed you can't be happy. We can have compassion for them because all they really want is to be loved.

Except when the recession was here, the population has been climbing...even back to the 80s

You have been here 10 months and you haven't a clue what you are talking about but you are entitled to your opinion. I also am in retail and do ok financially. It's management and up where you can survive. If I had to guess, you are in commission sales and your other half is a sales associate somewhere. There is a lot more opportunity here.

All negative posts are reported to moderators and are deleted shortly. You will get attacked by the herd and be labeled as a troll. I have been banned over 1000 times in last 7 years and I begun posting just like you did, no attacks or vulgar language, just the truth and hard cold facts.
The problem is that these idiots can't handle the truth and are lowest scum on earth. Uneducated Losers who worship money and those ugly desert homes.

Good Luck
There are laws against such a focused attack on someone online. You have well passed the threshold of what is merely free speech into something closer to libel/slander, harassment and cyber stalking.

Don't know what happened to you to be so angry at lvoc, maybe he sold you a house back in '06 and you got your place repoed, but get over it already. He's not a fortune teller and even if he claimed that housing prices "will rise in the future" YOU must do your own due diligence.

And I am one of the main people that report your posts. I come on here pretty often even at 3 am at night and I am happy to report your stupid posts at a moment's notice.

to be honest, the ones who truly love it here the most are retired folks over 50. They gamble, eat cheap food or sit at home all day.
It has been my experience that the people who love, love, love it here are either homebodies and it doesn't matter to them where they live (and thus the cost of living being the driving factor); or they love smoking, gambling, strip clubs, clubbing, narcotics and the rest of what makes Las Vegas world famous. So those people are living in their vacation wonderland.

Since I'm not interested in gambling, smoking, clubbing and doing drugs, nor am I interested in hanging out with people who enjoy these things, I find the social scene not just lacking but pathetic.

Back home, I used to be out nearly every day. Here, what's the point? I have no desire to watch stage-one and stage-two addicts going through their daily addiction routines.

So I've made travel my touchstone. The less time I spend in this city, the better. People don't even know when I'm gone because I post a few throw-away comments here and on Facebook from where ever I happen to be. Last week it was Mexico. Next week, who knows? Maybe I'll catch a break and get a few days off in a row again and go somewhere.

That's basically all I live for until leaving this town becomes the mature, responsible choice. I could sell everything and move anywhere I want tomorrow. But I'd be shirking my responsibilities if I did.

EDIT -- I neglected to mention a third group that loves, loves, loves it here: Whackjobs. Baked in the sun whackjobs. Religious whackjobs. Conspiracy theory whackjobs. And just run-of-the-mill whackadoodles. Las Vegas is like a magnet for them.
