Never thought I'd say this, but between Shirley and North Bellport, I would have to choose Shirley. There are a few more solid neighborhoods in Shirley, shopping is decent if you stick to the South Port Shopping Center and N.B. is just too scary. I love Bellport Village though. Whole other world.
All of Shirley is near the Ocean, but I would not pick the streets on the right going south towards Smith Point such as Argyle, and other British Isle named streets. I would instead choose Smith Rd. near the preserve - very private, a little hilly and a woodsy feel, or Tangiers. Tried and true the actual Tangiers neighborhood attends the first elementary school and the best - Wm.Floyd Elementary School. Tangiers streets are not grid like and are curved affording more privacy.
I also agree that parts of Centereach and Selden are indeed worse than parts of Shirley and the Mastics. They are less isolated, closer to The Mall and the rest of LI, but they are hardly garden spots. Lots of small converted summer homes in both of them too.
The smell from Mount Trashmore depends on which way the wind blows.
