My backyard looks like a war zone. I had 4 trees fall; 2 big ones (one of them an oak) were uprooted and fell parallel to the house, scratching its side and breaking the gutters (the closer one in the photo scratched the house). Phew!
The money I spent 3 months ago removing the most dangerous trees was money well spent - they most certainly would have destroyed the house.
If LIPA restores our power within the 7-10days mentioned before the storm - I will be happy.
All crews are currently trying to open the roads and tackle the major fallen transformers etc.
Stony Brook did get hit very hard this time. Unlikely to get power soon... Sucks.
I even lost cell phone reception for about a day completely.
When even Starbucks is closed - things are bad .
Glad I filled up the car tank at least - see desperate people around and lines of cars.
Happy to see you made it through alright.
I was at the gas station earlier refilling my gas containers. The generator burned through a bit of gas since we lost power on Monday. LIPA was around the corner an hour ago removing lines from a downed tree. The lineman told my neighbor we are looking at another 10-14 days without power. I'll be making a lot of trips to the gas station.
After seeing 100's of storm pictures and News12 coverage - here's a post-storm epiphany:
Maybe, just maybe, planting trees in that big 2' of grass between the sidewalk and street and allowing them to grow to 20', 30', 40'+ - isn't such a smart idea - you think?
It's not so much planting the trees there but the types of trees. It should be researched. There are only certain trees that perform well near streets and in NY climate. There are many types trees that you see around that were brought in from different areas that don't do well in this clmate/soil etc. Norway maples being one that you see everywhere on LI. Also most evergreen trees other than scrub pine.
Does Anyone know how Baldwin south of Merrick is? I have been trying to reach my sister, but keep getting a busy signal. I also tried her husbands cell phone but no answer.
I no longer live in LI so its to far to knock on her door as I live in Nashville, TN
No power here either. Some of Greenlawn restored but lots of us in it for the long haul, probably another week. Lights out on park ave and Jericho too.
Just saw some pictures taken by the storm survey team in Nassau of Ocean Ave between Jones Beach and Robert Moses. Its mostly destroyed. Parts are completely washed away. Its almost nauseating.
^ I can only imagine. The ocean crested over ocean parkway during the storm.
