OMG I totally remember the double mouse balloons, my mother would never buy me one! And the Charlotte Russes! I am looking forward to seeing pictures if anyone comes up with any!
Wow ,I remember GEM and Walcliff , the skating ring, Grew up right behind GEM,on Frederick Ave. Also worked there 65 ,66, in the toy department. Love it. Feel in love with the guy who was working at wahcliff
at the snack bar Jeff Vito. Wow awesome memories. Write me on FB My name Is Peggy Amato ..Than married a guy from the record department , Bob Normandin... WOW
I have no idea why I should Google, "Great Eastern Mills." Nevertheless, I did. The first item up was on this forum from Linda61 asking for a picture of the GEM in Elmont. Ironically, 8 days before she posted I scanned a picture I made in June, 1964 inside the store. Shortly after I clicked the shutter, I was escorted out! Here's a link to the image. Also on the site are a few pictures from Franklin Square, Carey HS, Hempstead Turnpike.
Reading these posts bring back so many memories; I lived in Elmont for nine years, neighboring Floral Park for 15-we used to shop at Great Eastern/TSS all the time when I was a kid. I remember getting lost in the store when I was about 7 years old, when I asked someone for help they paged my mother, she seemed relieved that I was found and not kidnapped! I remember fondly the record department, snack bar (and its awesome salted pretzels) and iron-on T-shirt counter, you could get any kind of image steamed onto a tee there. First time I'd ever heard of Mr. Bill (or SNL, for that matter) was at that counter-I was only little and wasn't allowed to stay up past 9! It's a Home Depot now, with a Checkers out front replacing the old Rustler.
I recall the Wal-Cliffe Roller Rink in Elmont, too-the wooden rink was so warped in some places you'd actually be skating upwards. It became Roller Castle a few years later-nice place but hardly the lovable dump that Wal-Cliffe was. Now there's just a row of condos where all that fun used to be. Such good times...
Was it Great Eastern Mills that sold groceries, put your purchases in bags, and then into a plastic bin on a conveyor belt that went to the rear of the store where you could load directly to your car?

There was a supermarket near Green Acres, maybe Safeway or Finast, that had rollers to move the bin with your groceries outside. There were a few storefronts in the strip. I think one was a Jewish deli.
Talk about a flash from the past! I remember my sister and I traveling about 30 minutes from South Ozone Park to Eastern Mills. My parents would do all their shopping from food to footware. It's been 40+ years but I can still smell the pasteries. I will ask my sister and see if she has any pictures. She use to work at a store call Korvets. Does that jar any memories!
