and I also heard of jokes about how guys from Long Island going to the city, are really tourists like people from NJ... like Long Island people are not from the same state

Thats pretty hilarious considering Brooklyn and Queens are on the Island.
Sounds like a BS bridge and tunnel dig to me.
Ill tell ya what....Ill stay out of Manhattan if those dbags will stay out of The Hamptons.
well, I was born in manhattan but lived on long island for 35 out 38 years of my life and I never heard that long island isnt part in ny. most people from brooklyn and queens dont even believe they live on long island but when you show them a map, they learn quik.

I never understood that, I always felt that the New York City/Brooklyn & Queens/Long Island thing is similar to a Venn Diagram.

I have the correct answer. The answer is that people consider only the 5 boroughs the real New York.
I never heard of people not knowing Long Island was part of New York. Maybe they meant they meant actually from NYC. Being from LI, I don't act like a tourist at all in the city. Most people I see get off the LIRR race out of Penn and go about their business. Sometimes when I go out of state, I guess because of my accent people think I say Rhode Island, opposed to Long Island. They say I didn't know Rhode Island was part of NY.

And people in Manhattan don't even think the other 4 boroughs are real NY lol. Since most of them are transplants, I find their scorn and disdain for everything not Manhattan fairly amusing.

well most people refer to long island as just nassau and suffolk, even though brooklyn/queens physically is part of long island... its the suburbs
its just how when people from LI or outside NYC say they are going to "the city", that usually means any of the 5 boroughs.. while people from NYC still say they are going to "the city", but are referring to manhattan only
I am originally from the Brooklyn and Queens border. I bought a house in Suffolk County when I was 26 years of age. Although geographically Brooklyn and Queens are on the same island as Nassau and Suffolk, the way of life is completely different for the most part, which is why people that live in the 5 boroughs do not consider people living on Long Island part of NYC. They of course know that it is part of NY state but consider people coming in from Long Island the same as someone coming from upstate NY or New Jersey.
The way of life is very different in most areas of the five boroughs than that of Nassau and Suffolk simply due to the interaction with more people constantly. Many of the homes are attached and many of the houses have two or three families renting apartments in them. I have been to Manhattan with people from Nassau and Suffolk who never worked there and do not go there often. They walked around like tourists from farther places. By this I mean that they did a lot of looking up and staring at buildings and the like. This is something that people that live in the five boroughs do not do since they see it all the time and know that it is better to keep an eye on the people around them.
With all of this being said; I do not know anyone that lived in the five boroughs that at any time acted like anyone from Nassau or Suffolk should not go to the five boroughs. When I lived there I had friends in each borough as well as friends in Nassau and Suffolk and never had anyone act like anyone else was not welcome because of where they lived.
