Good point. That's another dynamic into this as well. I agree. Probably because AAs were denied luxury for a long time and luxury goods are seen as a status of wealth? With rappers I know part of it is a lifestyle promotion too to sell records and craft an image. But yes, you're right. Only thing though is that in the States this is sort of seen as being gaudy, yet I wonder if in the East they look at their gilded class in the same way. I would think so, but IDK, that's why I am asking.

Let me guess, you probably grew up in some podunk town in Kansas. Iowa? Texas? Bright eyed and bushy tailed you came to LA hoping to make it big in the industry. Came here and got absolutely crushed. Now you need to blame it whoever you can to make yourself feel better before going back home with your tail between your legs.

Am I close?
Why would ostentatious wealthy foreigners have anything to do with me supposedly failing to get into the industry? How do you connect the dots here? You're just all over the place with your psychologizing over the internet. You've really derailed the thread with your ad hominems, just debate. You answered my question and I answered you back. I even conceded that your point was fair. I wasn't trying to insult a whole culture contrary to what your sensitive hide thinks. At this point, based on how new your post is, how utterly half ass your name is for being a wealthy WASP elite, and your personal attacks, I am thinking that you're a sock puppet or something. I mean why go to the tenth degree with the personal attacks.

Payutenyodagimas was able to counter with something very interesting and I responded to him accordingly. I doubt he's gonna resort to in the next post with personal attacks, because I doubt he's run out of ideas, unlike you.

wearing of jewelries by Asians or any ethnic group whether white, black or brown is not gaudy for me. its the blings blings that are gaudy.

for those designer bags, clothes etc..maybe blame the designers themselves why they make their products scream of wealth

So the too much bling is gaudy? Well I thought I was differentiating between just wearing luxury goods and being overtly ostentatious as in decking yourself out in nothing but luxury goods in a "bling bling" fashion. We are discussing gaudy, not just wearing luxury goods. I have luxury goods as do many rich people. I was talking about this phenomena that stems from the East and is a recent thing that's mostly a cultural staple of the heirs of the new wealth. I am talking about Rich Kids of Instagram type of stuff.

And it's not a racial thing, there are westerners that do this too, I was just wondering if there is a cultural difference between east and west and how this is viewed. That's mostly the gist of the thread.

Well, knockoffs in China and what they represent is a complicated topic and there really isn't a consensus about it among Chinese.

There is a colloquial term for knockoffs or copies called "shan zhai".

It can represent innovation, being resourceful, adaptive, in a certain way.

On the other hand, it also can threaten public health...such as food safety. There's been scandals about tainted food products such as infant formula. Not to mention IP theft which in the long run stifles creativity and innovation.

For that reason, you'll find Chinese who travel abroad load up on baby formula tins, and buy luxury goods there because they have more reassurance it's the genuine thing.

Wow, that must be a pain in the butt for them. I had no idea the knockoff market could have a drastic affect on the populace. I guess it cuts both ways. Knockoff gadgets I guess can be harmless but infant formula?

Trying to veer this discussion back toward an LA focus as that's the forum we're in, I think you are going to have a greater tendency of individuals across all ethnicities/races, etc. in this city to have a materialistic bent because LA is more of a glamour city where it either attracts those people or influences those on the fringes who feel pressured to embody some of the negative attributes associated with consumerism and materialism because of a need to fit in.

Sure, you'll have some people born in LA who despite living here, don't ascribe to some of the superficial qualities that are in the city's DNA. Whether it's a newcomer from another part of the US or from another country, generally speaking, the type of person who is going to flock to LA is different from the type of person who is going to flock to somewhere like Chicago or Boston.

This. The US went through something similar in the late 1800's and maybe up to the Great Depression. Once you're rich for a while the novelty gradually wears off and you start to value other things besides flaunting your wealth.

I figured all the way up to the roaring twenties and the Gilded Age. Yes, I agree that might be the biggest factor.
