Here’s a bright idea ..

“Hi guys, I know there’s a large homeless camp around here somewhere. Anybody know the exact cross streets? Have a ton of snacks that I want to hand out today/tomorrow.

Thanks!”

[quote=jm1982;52357869]Protestors outside Garcetti’s house ! Demanding an end to homelessness .. and ICE

Apparently his wife came out .. wonder if she handed them gift baskets .

Protesters gather outside L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti's Windsor Square residence early Saturday, calling on him to end homelessness and support disbandment of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency

It’s unclear if the mayor was home during the 7 a.m. protest. His wife, Amy Wakeland, briefly emerged from the residence shortly after demonstrators left. A Garcetti spokesman didn’t immediately provide a comment.

Surveillance footage captured the scene Monday evening in downtown Los Angeles when a homeless man waving a piece of plywood with a nail in it approaches a man walking his dog. The homeless man attacks the innocent victim in an unprovoked attack and strikes him in the head, hospitalizing him with a 'severe gash to his lip'.

I think the people in the camps should be required to clean up their mess. They should be arrested for violating the laws and as part of their punishment be required to clean up the mess and if it's a bike chop shop...return the bikes to where they stole them....or face longer sentencing.

When did anyone ever say that "nothing is the individual's fault"?

Haven't heard too many formerly homeless people say that they were able to overcome homelessness as a result of their own willpower.

In the meantime, increasing homelessness IS society's problem now. So it might help to do something about it, instead of posting stories about how awful it is.

You don’t agree that the individual is the one that has to decide to change ultimately?

From your article link

“Lending a hand can be as simple as saying “hello””

And risk getting randomly attacked ?

Would you really engage with mentally ill homeless person on the street ?

Do you really think these people will lift a finger to clean their messes up? Maybe a few will, for a little while, but let's remind ourselves who these people are (and get the media images of families and small children out of our minds):
  • Overwhelmingly middle aged males who have given up on society and accept homelessness as a way of life;
  • Many are former released prisoners who might have served for years and are not used to doing anything to sustain themselves;
  • Drunkards;
  • Drug addicts.

Most of them are likely low skill persons. THey were probably directly impacted by illegal immigration in that the illegals competed with them directly in their lines of work. Many of them had families once, but lost everything.

I feel for these men and I do think it is a crisis that men are tuning out completely. However, the society sees them as disposible because they are not providing for a family (let alone themselves) and because they are not providing any service/benefit to society. THis is the male disposability our society has created. THis is why the media tries to portray homelessness as being less male. Let's be honest that if these were women we would have not permitted this. No one in this society cares about middle aged men who have no purpose.
