It's true that housing costs vary wildly in Maine. Anything near the water will be twice as high as inland. Anything in southern Maine will be two or three times as much as the rest of Maine. (Aroostook is very cheap).

Default retiring from Air Force

I just started City-Data so bare with me!
My husband is a Air Force Firefighter and has been in the military for almost 18 years. We retire in a little over 2 years. WE have lived around the world-literally! Now we are in Germany for our final tour. We have 4 kids, aged 21(in the Navy), age 17 here with us, age 15 here with us and our 5 year old of course here with us. We have NO IDEA where to retire!!! Of course it will all depend on where he can find a good job, but we want to live somewhere that has low crime, not too hot in the summer, we love winters with snow and of course somewhere that isn't too high to live in so we can buy a house. We have lived in base housing for 17 years, have never bought our own home so it's important that we have some land too. I know this sounds like a "perfect place" that I'm asking for but I would like some input!! Thanks!

Welcome

I think that if you read through this thread, you will get a good understanding of how I feel about retiring to Maine [and in case you missed it, I do like Maine]

Maine has many 'perfect' places for retirees.
