I am hypersensitive to waves rocking and only ride in any boats when I must, and when I was visiting a friend at Martha's Vineyard, I took the 45 minute ride. No problems with feeling seasick, and I got green around the gills on the Swan Boats. Really. The views are really beautiful.

I can only assume since the OP's sceen name is foxboro82 that they live in well . . . Foxboro. If that's the case, it's only an hour drive or so to Woods Hole. I would definitely pick up the ferry there. Once you're on Rt. 28 keep an eye out for electric signs that tell you where the ferry parking is. During the season you'll need to park at a satellite lot (don't worry there are free shuttles to the ferry stop). The various lots fill up and they use particular overflow lots in a certain order. The signs will direct you to the most convenient lot that still has space.

The Seastreak ferry out of New Bedford is fast (1 hour) and very stable (twin-hull boat).

Here's a little secret... If you're coming from Boston, the fastest route to Martha's Vineyard (aside from Flying) is to take the ferry from New Bedford. It's about a 45 minute drive and an hour on the ferry. An hour and 45 minutes total. From Boston to Woods Hole is about an hour and a half in the car and 45 on the ferry. 2:15 total. The best part about taking the ferry from New Bedford? You don't have to deal with Cape Cod traffic on the bridges (which can be a nightmare in the summer time and easily add an hour to your commute time) or back roads (the drive to New Bedford is all highway and Woods Hole is not). For some reason, most people I talk to in the Boston area still seem to think that if you want to go to Martha's Vineyard, you're stuck dealing with Cape traffic and going to through Woods Hole.

If you're coming from Foxboro (as the name would imply), New Bedford is still the quickest all round route and you still don't have to deal with Cape traffic. Parking is really easy too (right at the state pier).

The other option is flying. Cape Air has service to/from Martha's Vineyard from Boston and New Bedford airports. It's a bit pricier though.

Agree, its 45 mins, but not that bumpy if you take the Steamship. The Island Queen is a lot faster b/c there is no loading of boats on/off, but there is more movement.
