There could be an entire thread on local businesses that have closed in Harvard Square (i.e. Harnett's, the globe shop, etc....)
The Wursthaus was probably the biggest loss of them all.

Great Wursthaus story. 1990ish. They had a small side bar. In the left back as you went in the front door. Had an entrance off Mass Ave. Several of us at the bar one night. Eating, drinking, and smoking cigars. The owner (Frank Cardullo) comes over and we are talking whisky and cigars. He is a cigar smoker himself. Bartender calls him aside. Soon after a couple stops and says to him we do not know if we should thank you or not, but thank you. He says have a nice evening.

Later I asked the bartender what was that all about. He said the couple had complained to him about the cigar smoke. He told the couple that one of them was the owner and smoking was allowed. They said they were still unhappy about it. He told Cardullo about them. Cardullo told the bartender to tell them their check was on the house and please leave.

I remember Lum's being located in Danvers, MA on Endicott St. across the street from the Liberty Tree Mall. Knockwurst steamed in beer were my favorites. Next to that was Romie's Oyster House and Quarterdeck Lounge. The Quaterdeck featured strong classic mixed drinks (Martinis, Old Fashions, and Manhattans) and a regular group of potential AA members really enjoying themselves at the bar. Seafood was good in the restaurant. Also on this strip was the "bargain" York Steak House. There was a charge for everything there except the napkin and utensils! Featuring thin steaks cooked while pushing your tray through the line. A pat of butter cost you 2 cents. No need to tip you were your own waiter.

johngolf, I remember (not especially fondly) the smoke in the Wursthaus.
Certainly I didn't complain, though. I guess I should have!

Beardsley's in Northampton, which no one will remember from the '80s. A tiny, intimate place with white tablecloths and excellent food and service.

Also La Veracruzana that had the best poblano sauce (in the world?) a family secret recipe.

And the legendary St. Regis, on Pleasant St. I think. It had the most beautiful dining room I have ever seen, upstairs you sat on couches and got waited on in front of a blazing fireplace and in the next room people were dancing.

Bailey's, Bailey's, Bailey's. Still can't go by Boylston without getting a craving for a gooey sundae.

Toki in Allston had the best beef tongue appetizer my wife and I have ever had. It was frustrating to see them go from a yakitori place to a typical japanese sushi restaurant and then to finally close.

Orleans Crawfish in Randolph was owned by a friend of mine. I guess it just wasn't too popular, because they had to shut down. They really had good fries and wings, though, in addition to good $1 oysters and legitimate crawfish.

Le's vietnamese restaurant at the Atrium in Newton. For anyone living west of Boston it's hard to find a good bowl of pho without driving into Boston, Woburn, Randolph or Lowell. There's a Vietnamese restaurant that recently opened in downtown Framingham, but all the waiters are White so I'm not sure how good it is.

I remember Le's. There were a number of various Asian and other types of restaurants that occupied that space over the years. I think when the Atrium opened that's where Marco Solo was. Finally, Bertucci's opened there and was a more stable tenant. Sadly, the mall is gone now and they're turning the building into medical offices.

Have you ever heard of or been to Saigon Restaurant in Millis? It's very good.
