Companies with no return to office mandate is becoming less common.

I listened to an interesting investor presentation yesterday where at one point they talked about the number of job openings available vs what companies are saying on their earnings calls. Two years ago 15% of public companies claimed to have "labor issues" and today that figure is less than 5%. It's believed that many of the current job openings are "phantom" openings that companies have no intention of filling and that they may be left open for various reasons like HR compliance.

It's kind of sad...apparently that whole work from home period meant nothing to many companies. People can kiss the idea goodbye of living in a more affordable area instead of having to live right near their office to avoid an awful commute.

What is the point of phantom job offerings? I've heard that too but don't quite see the point. Maybe soon we'll see phantom apt and house listings.

I'm not in HR so I don't know. I don't think there's necessarily a point but it might be a byproduct of a certain process...like if there's a layoff and the company says "try applying for an internal position" they'll leave the req open.

That's why it's always good to look for a new job while you still have your current one (if you're trying to find a better company or salary). It can take more time than people think, especially in these volatile times where companies can change their minds at the drop of a dime. Like if there's a position they 'urgently' needed to fill that all of a sudden becomes part of a company wide hiring freeze, for example.

Maybe they'd be willing to negotiate the # of days required in office for the right candidate? Never hurts to try if you really want to work for that company.

All sorts of reasons. Could even be them just looking for intelligence on who's out looking (and how much they are asking for)
