We're currently looking to move to Worcester County and hubby will be driving to Framingham for work. So 2 questions:

1. If we live west of Worcester, how is the commute? Is there any back-up in the Worcester area?

2. We're looking for ruralish affordable towns with decent school systems (we have one year olds, so not an immediate need, but will be)...any recommendations for good towns to look within say a 35 mile radius of Framingham?
Thanks!

Default Commute from Central MA to Framingham and best towns in Central MA

Heck, you can cover 1/3 of Massachusetts within a 35 mile radius of Framingham. You really need to narrow it down with a price range in mind in order to provide more meaningful suggestions.

Right. Sorry. Our price range is up to $300K. We're willing to sacrifice an updated kitchen as long as it's big enough. Th emost important things for us: 3BR, 1.5bath, garage and at least 0.5 acre, preferably more. We want a nice private lot...that's the most important thing for us.

I have commuted from Charlton to Newton & Southborough via the Mass Pike. I commuted from Worcester & Northborough to Framingham for work as well in the past.

Towns I would consider for a commute into Framingham west of Worcester:

Sturbridge
Charlton
Auburn
Millbury

More bang for you buck the further west you go.

For towns east of Worcester I would consider:

Westborough
Shrewsbury
Northborough

The commute isn't great & backups tend to occur between Exits 12 & 13, but it's not terrible. It would be much worse going into Newton or Boston. I wouldn't mind doing a commute from any of those towns into Framingham.

I can't add anything useful, and concur that "35 miles" is quite a range. I do think, though, that most local people consider Framingham to *be* "Metrowest," and that could confuse some people in answering. Worcester and west thereof is central Mass., as far as I know. Framingham is in the middle of Metrowest.
Good luck on your move. There are some lovely areas out that way.

Yes, I concur that the title of your thread is mighty confusing. You might want to retitle "Commute from Central Mass to Metro West" or "Commute from points West of Worcester to Metrowest"

I'm not sure what you mean by backup in the Worcester area but would be glad to share my two cents on the rest.

I'd recommend checking out Bolton & Berlin - both nice, quiet towns with a rural feel, good-size lots & a reasonable commute. I can send you links to school system data as well.

We have friends who moved out of Charlton because of the schools (went to Sturbridge) but Sturbridge & that area would be a pretty nasty commute if you're going to Framingham.

I have family in Charlton who love the schools. I guess everyone's experience is different. I am planning a move back to MA this summer & Charlton is at the top of my list.

I have found that the nicest houses at the best price are in Rutland, but unless you're working in Worcester I wouldn't reccomend that town.
