You've got that right! My wife and I had a great time every time we visited Hawaii. She won't even go to the South with me to visit her relatives for fear we would be shot or lynched.

Mahalo mickey, the only "hate" crimes we have here are bored jerk punks taking purses and wallets of tourists when they are left unattended on the beach!

I think you should pay heed to truthwave. Hawaii is paradise, but white people did not find it first, but rather encroached on the people they found there, and those people resent it. Haoles (howlies) is the name you will hear yourself referred to as (if you are white). If your kids are attending public school in maui, they will most likely be ruthlessly and mercilessly picked on by the island children. You shouldnt leave valuables in your car when you go out (or stay at home for that matter) though Id give that advice anywhere. Cars getting torched does happen. There are local areas and beaches that you would probably be pushing it less if you skipped. Now I wouldnt go as far as to say you wouldnt be accepted by the majority of people, or even a large minority... but the sunshine and lollipops posted by all these people with many many hundreds if not thousands of posts need to spend a little less time at the keyboard, get their heads out of their butts, and travel more than 5 minutes from their gated communities, and the hired help (locals), and see the real nitty gritty just out of their sight. If you are into perfect weather, aloha spirit, and all the fun life has to offer - maui is for you. If you are into dog fighting, methamphetamines, and thievery bordering on looting - maui is for you. Either way - try the laulau - its awesome!!

Your wife a time traveler? Lynched? Really? I just moved to the NC mountains 18 months ago - Only black people Ive heard of being killed or hurt around here were hurt or killed by other black people. And you don't get much more southern or rural (or behind the times, in some cases) than the Appalachian mountains.

What - do you work for the tourists board, have rose colored glasses, or get a kick out of denying reality? Fair is fair though: If I was native Hawaiian Id probably not like haoles either.

No, she is not a "time traveler". She moved to Ohio from Mississippi where she was born when she was two years old, and she is now 61 years old. She remembers the "no coloreds allowed" places, just a hole in the ground for the "coloreds" to use for a toilet at the places they stopped for food or gas and being very thirsty because they couldn't get a drink of water. No "coloreds" allowed at the drinking fountain.

Now times have changed - maybe. There is still the Klan, mostly in Southern states. You may have moved to the NC mountains, but are you white and married to a black woman? Might make a difference in how you feel about it. At least it does to us.

It may be OK for us to travel to Belzoni MS where she was born and on to Philadelphia MS to visit her uncle Bishop Clifton Jones, but she is hesitant to do so. We even get dirty looks here in Columbus OH - some from whites but a lot from blacks - when we go out. Not as much as when we were first married in 1981, but some.

Yeah, I know this has nothing to do with perceived racism in Hawaii other than when we vacationed in Hawaii we never had the dirty looks or racist remarks that we have had on the mainland.
