I, myself only, appreciate the fact that ALL these questions and dreams keep coming to light again, and again.

It refreshes my mind, as old and as many cobwebs as it has, so that I do not have to go looking through 1,000's or more of these posts trying to find a question that has a good answer.

Thanks one and all for your patience and efforts to be a helpful human to one another.

Keep up the good work...

I like to be helpful, which is why I post here frequently, but I do think that the very general questions which get asked 10 times a week, every week... as a number of regular posters here have mentioned previously... are best answered by referring people to FAQs, such as the 2nd Sticky thread at the top of the page.

Once folks have absorbed the general info they can ask more specific questions, a better use of their time and energy, and ours.

My neighbor across the street is a carpenter and he seems to be home a lot. When I first came to Maui a year ago, a guy saw my TX driver's license in the auto parts store and started talking to me. He was from Texas and was moving back because construction work dried up here, but was picking up in Texas.

I have several friends who live or lived for a long time on Maui. Three of them are in the building trades and none of them have much work. One works occasionally (he's a contractor), one is working for much less $$ in another field (steady work), another isn't working much and had to borrow money from his family to get by. Two of them have been on Maui for 20 or so years. One friend who lived on Maui, moved back to the mainland because she had young kids and did not feel the schools were very good there. Another family I know lived there for about a year and really wanted to raise their kids there (sending them to an alternative school) but could not make ends meet so moved to the mainland to get work.
