Sure, why don't you folks from the mainland come on over and help us poor Island people out.

Not all of it is like that, just certain parts, and they've been fixing parts of it. The blog has more pics of other parts of the road which are long and paved.
Heck that road looks better than some of my old neighborhood streets in Chicago in the pothole season. The month or so between Winter and construction. Midwest humor

Just for those interested: ruprick (who is probably busy taking care of his luscious Hana-garden, rather than spend time in the forum) has made the move and seemed perfectly happy when we met him (and his lovely family). And I believe they might have driven the back way to Hana as well. So all is good, Maui no ka oi despite all the potholes in the roads!

? Difference of weather where and Lahaina? Hana? If you're really on the island then go there for a few days. That should take care of it better than any comment in a thread would. But I am probably replying to a troll

Do you disagree with his assessment, or are you simply sorry that you didn't think of it first?

I don't quite get all the angst and dread over the Pi'ilani Highway. I've driven it twice, and other than the short distance where it skirts the edge of a cliff (I forget exactly where that is), it really was not that bad of a drive. Certainly, I found the Kahekili Hwy. (Hwy. 340) along the northwest coast of Maui to be quite a bit more challenging.

To be sure, it is not designed or maintained to handle much traffic volume. But if my experiences were typical, it can certainly handle the 3 or 4 cars that are using it at any given time.

As for living in Hana, I would think that only those who thrive in small, isolated places with very few services or amenities would be happy there.

Mahalo for the reply Kokoleka1 I am not presently on the island. My wife and kids are in sunset terrace in Honokowai. I work long hours on mainland to save for some property. I know its gonna be a lot. I have found a few almost affordable sites in Hana but my wife is very resistant to Hana. Saying that it is colder, rainier, and very far away from larger shopping and activity centers, like Kahului . and I know it is somewhat but just not sure how much. even if I could spend a few days there it doesnt give a true picture of the seasons and what to expect 6 months from now.
If you have any insight on what we might need to know about living in this area I would greatly appreciate it.
Aloha
Marc

your wife is hesitant for good reason, when you need to go to town it will take you 3 hours both going and returning home. not really any shopping at all and not much to do either. it is a beautiful place but you have to ready for the lifestyle.
