Don't even think about sending your family to Hana! Not that it isn't lovely. However with her assessment of much rainier your wife is spot on. Not to talk about the mold etc. Plus Hana is tiny. I am very used to small tightly knit communities, but climate aside, I'd feel trapped in Hana. Does your wife work? What about schools for the kids? You might as well consider Molokai if you look at Hana because of affordability. But honestly, with the travel you would put in (assuming that you'll stay on the mainland) you can have a different life in Costa Rica or other countries for your money and put in the same travel-time to see your family. I don't know what made you want to move to Maui to begin with, but make sure you are aware of your motives. Moving to Hawai'i comes at a price, even if I am a bit reluctant to chime into the generally very negative song that is sung in here. But there are a lot of people who are ill prepared who take the plunge. I have an inkling you might be one of them. Plus at the rate of almost affordable in Hana you'll find a lot of other properties on Maui that might suit you better. It took us a good 15 years of regular (at times months long) visits before we were ready to buy and knew where we wanted to buy.

Saying that it is colder, rainier, and very far away from larger shopping and activity centers, like Kahului . and I know it is somewhat but just not sure how much. even if I could spend a few days there it doesnt give a true picture of the seasons and what to expect 6 months from now.
If you have any insight on what we might need to know about living in this area I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have to buy property on Maui? The Big Island is much more affordable, both for vacant land and for housing. How long are you going to work on the mainland? Will you be looking for work when you have enough saved up to buy something in Hawaii?

Even in the remote area where I live, there is a lot more shopping closer than what you'll find in Hana. And it's only an hour and a half to either Kona or Hilo, versus the three hours to get anywhere from Hana.
