It is very hard to learn Spanish fluently though because, as my Cuban coworker tells me, the Cubans here don't speak Spanish correctly. They use lots of slang. Factor that in with the variations that Brazilians, Mexicans, etc. use and it's really hard to catch on! Maybe taking a class would help you though...?
There is no variation that Brazilians use ... they do not speak Spanish period ... they speak Portuguese ... which if you did not know is a different language .

Yes yes, I am aware that Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish. The two are somewhat similar though, so unless you're familiar with either language, it might be tough to distinguish what you hear.

It all sounds the same, why not learn English and avoid the confusion. I wouldnt move to Cuba or Puerto-Rico and demand that they learn MY language.
