Both may be too large for you as they have metros well over 300k, however they both have an urban core (Kalamazoo more so), thriving downtowns and nightlife, and large suburban area.

Saugatuck may be the best fit you size wise. Unlike what some here have suggested, it is not a city that a lot gays vacation in, but instead it is a vacation city that has a large gay population.
No it is definitely both. The Dunes and the other gay centric resorts are booked all summer.

O.P.., please seriously consider Grand Rapids, from Downtown going east through the neighborhoods of Heritage Hill, Cherry Hill, East Hills, Eastown, and East Grand Rapids. I think these neighborhoods would feel the most welcoming to you.
I moved to G. R. in 1982, and though I was appalled by the dour, insular "culture" at the time, Grand Rapids has changed immensely (thanks to our many, many newcomers.) I'm now proud to call GR my home! Personally, that's HUGE.

Yes, you are correct. It is both, but some here were implying that it is only a vacation spot and that the OP may feel out of place during the non vacation months.

You are correct, I re-read your first post. It was well stated I just misread it.
