French Président Francois Hollande presented the Legion of Honor, France’s highest military award, to the unknown service member.
The ceremony was part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion that led to the liberation of Europe.

The medal presentation "honoured the sacrifices made by American service members and the links between France and the United States" said Président Hollande.
"These links were forged from the common conception of democracy and freedom. [The medal] bears testimony of a solidarity which forever unites our two countries".
