Operation Normandy 2012 - French sailors commemorate the 68th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, Carentan,
France, Jun. 4, 2012. Paratroopers from the Allied nations gather in Normandy each year as a remembrance to the

1944. The commemoration, which includes ceremonies for the more than 9,000 service members who gave their lives
during the invasion and airborne operations, allows the countries involved to pay homage to those who fell 68 years

Soldiers of The 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland seen rehearsing in Loos, France where 19 unidentified men are due to be
buried with the traditional headstone inscription of ‘Known Unto God’.

From the location and regiments involved, initial indications were that these men were combatants from the Battle of Loos which took place
in September and October, 1915. The British offensive was part of the attempt by the French to break through the German defences in
Artois and Champagne and restore a war of movement. Despite improved methods, more ammunition and better equipment the Franco-British
attacks were contained by the German armies, excepting for local losses of ground. Allied losses were estimated at 60,000 during the
Herbstschlacht (Autumn Battle) with German losses reportedly adding another 26,000 to the total of casualties.
