A special thanks to Gunners Mate, 1st Class/my Great-Uncle Robert French Abbott who passed away yesterday. He enlisted in the US Navy during WWII in Feb. 1942, attended subchasers and gunnery schools, served on a subchaser in Atlantic-Pacific-Aleutians & Mid-Pacific and took part in the Kwajalein invasion. On a personal note, the gentle Abbott family Patriarch will be sorely missed by all his immediate and extended family members. RIP Great-Uncle Robert!

This link is to an article about the last Reunion of the Doolittle Raiders. Each year they gather to offer a toast in remembrance to those they lost that day. There are only 4 of them left and they have decided that this is their last year making the trip to do the toast. When I visited the AF Museum a year ago, that display of their toasting glasses with their names engraved on them moved me to tears.

Most of them have been turned upside down signifying their passing.

Godspeed to those brave men. All of them.

VETERANS DAY UNTIL ETERNITY: It's not about what branch we serve in, or what job we do in the military. It's not about who has seen combat or who hasn't and it isn't about how many decorations you have earned.

SACRIFICE is the one thing all Veterans have in common, so rather than to trivialize a beautiful thing, I will leave it at that.

To the Veterans who sleep only to never awaken: Your sacrifice has not and will not be forgotten. Generations after generations continue to carry the torch that you were unable to pass on. The ultimate price you have paid and for this, I thank you.

To the Veterans who have retired their boots and have moved on to greener pastures: A job well done. Enjoy the well-deserved life that is before you and don't look back. What's done is done and it is now time to move forward. I thank you for your service.

To the Veterans who are currently serving: Ride the wave of freedom and let it take you to where you want to go. Continue to push forward and continue the fight. Don't question your accomplishments and don't tarnish a beautiful thing. For better or worse you owe it to yourselves to make the best of it. I thank you for your service.

To the Veterans who live each day with the scars and unforgettable memories: Your destiny may not be clearly understood at times. You are still here for a reason and it is up to each of you to discover this reason. I only hope society does a much better job at addressing the invisible wounds many of you suffer from in hopes of one day bringing you much deserved peace. One day at a time, so do what you have to do to live your new life to its fullest. I thank you for your service.

To the military members who are on the cusp of earning their Veteran status: If you do not improve yourselves, then you will never improve those around you. Try to stay as grounded as possible and try to understand the bigger picture. You have a long way to go and reaching the end is not guaranteed nor is the respect you have earned up to now guaranteed to last. Don't go along with the flow for the sake of being like the herd. Live your life and be who you truly are and you will discover what this world is all about. I thank you for your service.

To the loved ones of any Veteran: Your sacrifice and pain does not go unnoticed. Be forever proud and continue to support what makes this country so special. I thank you.
