Checked the St Paul PD crime maps for January. Westside is not bad for most things, but there seemed to be a whole lot of burglaries of residence. If a person looks at all the maps, focusing on the white areas on the grid, those are the areas with least crimes reported. City of St. Paul, MN - Official Website

I would've suggested Highland until you said "nightlife". There's a couple of decent restaurants, a cinema and a bar there within walking distance.

Truth is you pretty much have to be somewhere around Grand Ave for night life Even downtown isn't that great. Though they have some live theater and music at the Ordway.

I think you get the gist. The east side of St. Paul isn't exactly winning any awards right now. Como and Grand Ave really are pretty much it for this side. You probably will want to stay south of 94 in that quadrant with 35E is the other border and the Mississippi River.

I also like St. Clair, and think West St. Paul could be good to look at.

If you want a wildcard for a suburb I will throw in Roseville & the Falcon Heights area. You will experience our state fair make know doubt about it. The Rosedale mall has quite a bit of amenities. Still close to Como zoo and everything else it has to offer. We got quite a bit of parks and a couple really nice lakes. You are still less than 10 minutes from work and also close to Minneapolis.

It will come down to whether you are a city person or suburb person. I grew up and have lived my whole life on the St. Paul side (grew up in Roseville). Love the area but will admit I hang out more on the Minneapolis side. You may find out that just finding a convenient place to live that is affordable comes first. Worry about the nightlife lastly.

I think Falcon Heights and Lauderdaile are very interesting places. Very convenient to both the city and the suburbs.

For nightlife there are two options: Downtown and Grand Ave. If you live near Grand parking is a non-issue: hello, you live there. Otherwise walk or ride your bike for plentiful parking and don't be a motoring *******.
