Looking for a suggestion. I am traveling from Hattiesburg, Ms to Tacoma, Wa. Problems: limited snow driving experience, phobias of high bridge, mountain driving for one of the drivers. Positives: having enough time to make a slow drive.

Which route should we take? I-20-to I-10 to I-5 (LA, TX, NM, AZ, CA, Or) OR Go up diagonally taking I-40 to 70 (AK, KN, Ok, WY up to ID)

Go up diagonally. I've driven both ways and I much prefer going the Denver route.

Like this:
I-20W Jackson to Dallas;
I-35N to Wichita;
I-135N to Salina, KS
I-70W to Denver, then take the 470 Toll road North to get around Denver and pick up I-25N;
I-25 N to Cheyenne
I-80W to Salt Lake City;
I-84W to Portland, OR;
I-5 to Tacoma

2750 Miles. Most people feel comfortable taking about 400 miles a day.

The only leg I have not driven is the I-84 leg. I've been down all the rest of the roads. Drive during the day! It's a beautiful trip and one of the few things I miss about working (I'm retired) is seeing all the countryside. If you have never seen the eastern slope of the Rockies at Denver, you ain't going to believe it. You'll be crossing the Rockies in Wyoming and the road is straight and fast. Might be a little windy (Casper, WY, is actually the windiest city in the US; not Chicago). Keep an eye out for The Continental Divide - there's a sign.

It'll be a great trip! I hope you love driving and traveling as much as I do; I started in 1963 and never got over it

If you're leaving soon (in March) you will indeed get some snow driving experience if you take the diagonal route.

Take the southern route, but don't take 10 the whole way. Veer off and see the Grand Canyon and Vegas.

Well I saw snow and high wind for WY and UT. So I'm thinking west to north is going to be the better route. Also I've gotten more suggestions for that route. The temps for the southern part will be mostly as it is where I'm living. It will get a little cooler heading up North. Thanks for the suggestions.

Here's a chain control list for California. Chains are required (not optional - you must have them available) for I-80W for today. I-10 is clear. It changes all the time.

Unfortunately, Arizona is not so thorough with their postings, but they have similar laws.

Iv'e driven both routes. I have a lot of experience driving in the snow and this time of the year I would take the (LA, TX, NM, AZ, CA, Or) route. The diagonally route (for me) is the preferred route, however you can run into ground blizzards. I love road trips and since you're taking a slow trip there is a lot to see.
