Hello, I'm not from Mississippi, I live in the Chicago area. As I'm reading some of the Mississippi threads, I hearing that alot of people that from Mississippi want to move out of the state and a lot of transplants from up North and west coast that moved to Mississippi recently saying that they have made a big mistake, saying that it is too slow and boring, lack of nightlife, activities, good schools and they want to move or move back to a big city metro area. I want know your feelings on if you have/had chance ,would you move out of Mississippi if the opportunity comes to you ?

Default Just left MS

I just left MS because it is just too unkempt. The people have little pride in the state and there litter problem is out of control. It breaks my heart because MS is such a beautiful place.
All of my life I wanted nothing more than to live in MS, I have been to every state except Alaska, and still like MS best, in spite of its faults. After all, no place if perfect.
The MS experience is hard to put in words for me, in many ways it is a state of contradictions and extremes, very mysterious and hauntingly beautiful. MS is more of a feeling for me, I use to feel better there then anywhere else. It even smells better than any other state. True Mississippi lovers will know what I mean when I say it is a state unlike anywhere else and its allure will work on only a select few; I feel fortunate to have been one of the few "that gets it".
Although Ive been gone only two months, I know I will eventually miss it, its pull on my heart strings will once again draw me back; but only for a visit, I will never live there again unless it changes drastically, to my liking...which it will not, and should not unless it wants too. Anyway, Im rambling...but Yes...I did move there, left there after 1 1/2 years and would not return.

I left MS after 22 years following Katrina, never really wanted to come back, too much emphasis on casinos which have really ruined the coast in my opinion. Yes, MS has its faults but, there are some nice aspects. I am returning after 3 years primarily because for 3 years have been paying rent and now my house is finally finished and I still am paying a mortgage, if I could have sold it I probably would have not come back. But, I am. As for the education, my children both went to public schools on the coast, I guess they were not the greatest but, I felt the teachers they had were some of the best, some were not so great, but, after leaving the coast coming to NY state where the schools are really superior as far as less crowding and smaller classes they were able to do just as well as kids who had been here. Of course I have high standards for my kids so, maybe that had something to do with it. I think if you want your children to be educated and you are involved that it really makes a difference regardless of where your kids go to school. Just my opinion. I have met kids who have had private school education and they do not seem to be any better educated than some kids who have been educated in public schools from MS. So, guess it depends on what you want to learn. I do agree with mr biloxi the trash is something that I do not miss and will defenitely have difficulty looking at that again.

If I left it would be for a work transfer, I wouldn't just up and move. I love it here. If I left I would be gone a few years and then I would find my way back, like I always have. In North MS people do have pride in their communities and homes. I have not seen any litter problems as one other person described. I can't speak for the whole state-seeing as I haven't seen all of it, but MS is home to me. It always will be no matter where I live.

Default Southern Culture at it's finest.

I hail from the Northern part of the state. A small village called Blue Springs. Just north of Tupelo and Southeast of Memphis.

I was born in a tiny town called, New Albany, you might have recognized that name--William Faulkner was born there. Tupelo, just to my South has a population of just over 30,000 people--you might have recognized it as well--Elvis Presley was born there.

A bit under an hours drive and I can be in Oxford, MS--John Grisham is from there and still has a home there. It is also the home to Ole Miss or University of Mississippi.

Would I ever leave? Not unless forced to. I've lived in Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas. Although I found much to like in each of the states above, MS had my heart.

The red clay hills of North Mississippi is seeped so deeply into my blood, nothing could part me from them.

My husband and I decided that we wanted our family to experience what we did while growing up. And thankfully, they have and I believe are the better for it. Our area still considers respect and politeness to be crucial in teaching children good social skills. Knowing right from wrong, and being able to admit being wrong teaches good character.

The slower pace of life in Mississippi might send many running to the bright lights but it draws me closer to this state with each passing day. I like living in an area where one can leave their driveway and drive a short distance to the local store, maybe meet half a dozen cars, but with each one that you meet, you can just about guarantee a friendly wave. See someone who has car trouble on the side of the road? They won't be there for long, some kindly person will stop and either help them or take them where they need to go.

Mississippi, regardless of what has been posted, is a very friendly state. If a person comes here with a good attitude, does not try to talk down to us, or treat us like we are illiterate or two bricks shy of a load, they will make fast friends for life. Yet, we can and do get testy when we get snubbed. We are a very prideful people, who choose to live a more simple lifestyle than those of our Northern friends. The operative word here though is CHOOSE. It is not for many folks, but for the few that dream of a more meaningful and peaceful lifestyle, no other state can compare.

We have beauty from our Northern borders to our Southern borders. One might have to work harder in some places to discover it, but it is there.

Yes, we are a state that is divided into economic sections. The Northern and Southern parts of our state has better economic status, yet the middle part of our state has some of the most pristine areas left in the country.

So, no, I would not leave. I proudly claim her as my home.

MS is just too small for me. I'm young, I'm footless and fancy-free, and the pace of life is too slow for me. That's nothing against MS, however. That's just how it is. MS would be a great place for people tired of the rat-race, looking for a little plot of land, some trees, and friendly neighbors.

Personallly I wouldn't mind Miss at all to live in. The state has it's charms. I would like to be a tourist of it again. My life is fine where it is (so far) so I would not move unless I just had to. I am sorry if I missed the point of the thread. I'll be back someday.

No, it is home. It is true that Mississippi is so unique. It is hard to put into words, but once you get it in you, you just can't leave.
There are things that make me frustrated like lack of city ordinances on messy businesses etc, but there are many things that I just love here and just couldn't imagine anywhere else.
I just came back from the Smoky Mountains yesterday. It was absolutely gorgeous, but I just couldn't imagine living there. I was glad to come back home......humidity and all!
