BURGLAR FOUND THE OPEN DOOR

A sneak thief entered the home of Dan Sutter, on North Spring street, Belleville, some time Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, and stole a purse containing $25, which was in Mr. Sutter's trousers, which hung on a chair alongside his bed. Mr. Sutter retired early, and as it was warm he did not close the door. When he awoke it was morning and his trousers were lying near the door and their contents, with the exception of the purse, were scattered about the room. He immediately reported the robbery to police, but no clue to the thief has been discovered.

WESTERN UNION INDICTED AS LINK IN GAMBLING RING

Bridgeton, New Jersey, June 6---Four St. Louis men were accused of bookmaking today in one of a series of indictments naming the Western Union Telegraph Co.
The St. Louis men named were Sidney Wyman, Charles J. Rich, Ralph Leon and Edward B Fischer. They were accused with the company and local manager Edward H Frake, of conspiring to operate a bookmaking establishment.

I looked up those guys and found out one of them is in the Poker Hall of Fame.

TO PRISON AND POORHOUSE

Macon, Mo., Jan. 16---When Joe Huston and William Brown were sentenced by Justice Ames to long terms in jail for stealing, their wives, who were in the courtroom, assailed the Justice with a storm of protests. Mrs. Brown boldly walked up to the Justice, and shaking her fist in his face, said, " These men are our husbands and our only support. Now, if you are going to send them to jail you will have to support us and our children, for neither of us has a bite to eat." An investigation was made and it was found the woman had told the truth. Then the court ordered the women and their children sent to the poorhouse during their husband's sentences. Huston has an unenviable police record. A year ago he made an officer who attempted to arrest him hold up his hands, then he calmly disarmed him and went through his pockets.

THEFT

While working in her garden early Monday evening, Mrs. Modie Seabaugh, who resides on Highway 61, a short distance north of its intersection with old Highway 74, heard noises in her house, and investigating, saw someone driving away in an old model Ford car. A radio set was missing from the house, she reported.

CAUGHT A COUNTERFEITER

A counterfeiting plant in full operation was found in the thick woods along Spring river last Thursday by Wm. Weaver, former jailer, and E.S. Pike, detective, and the counterfeiter who gave his name as W.H. Murray, is in the county jail awaiting trial before the federal court. Murray had his counterfeiting outfit concealed in a sod hut in the woods. Counterfeit coins were found on his person, moulds were found in the hut, and in one mould was a counterfeit dollar still in the process of making, completing a chain of evidence impossible to refute. Murray evidently recognized this fact, for he confessed this crime and also admitted having spent 17 years of his life in various penitentiaries. He claimed, however, that he had not yet passed any of the "*****" as he was waiting to get several hundred dollars made before trying to "cash."

ROBBERY ATTEMPT IN 1918

Four Bandits Blew Up Safe But Made No Haul

An unsuccessful attempt was made June 4, 1918, to rob the Rocheport Bank. Four bandits entered the bank and attempted to blow the safe with nitro-glycerine, but were unsuccessful. The bank safe contained $10,000. The explosion awakened A.B. Lewis, marshal of the town at that time. As he approached the bank, the robbers opened fire. Lewis returned the shots.
Miss Opal Lloyd, a sister of the man who was forced to drive the car of the bandits, was wounded by a bullet during the shooting. She was a telephone operator, and, awakened by the explosion, had gone to the window of the telephone office.
Joseph Ross, one of the bandits, died a week later in St. Mary's Hospital, Jefferson City, from wounds received the night of the robbery. Before he died he made a confession.
Bill Gleason was later arrested in St. Louis. He was identified by parties in Rocheport as being one of the men seen loitering about town the day of the robbery. While he was out on bond and before his case came to trial he was shot and killed by a detective.

WHILE THEY SLEPT

A burglary of extraordinary boldness took place last night at the residence of A.P. Ford, in the west part of this city.
While the family were asleep the burglar crawled in the bedroom window in the west part of the house and took from the room, Mr. Ford's suit of clothes, which contained a gold watch, valued at about $35, some keys and $1.50 in money. The thief passed within two feet of Mr. Ford's head, but so silent and softly was his tread that none of the family were awakened. There is no clue to the burglar but the officials are working on the case.
George W. Miller is the loser of a gold watch and chain and three or four dollars, which were stolen from his house last night. Sometime during the night a burglar entered the dining room of the house through a window, went into Mr. Miller's bedroom and after ransacking his clothes, scattered them all over the room. Mr. Miller had a pocketbook in his inside vest pocket which contained some notes and other valuable papers, and an old 25 cent piece, which he had for many years. The family knew nothing of the burglary until this morning.
We were informed by officials that there is a suspicion that these burglaries were committed by local parties here in Gallatin.
Since writing the above, more burglaries have been reported to us.

The residence of W.D. Hamilton was burglarized of $5.75 in money.
Ed Yates' Hardware store was entered by thieves but nothing seems to have been taken.
The home of Uncle "Jim" Miller was entered by burglars but were scared away before they could get anything.
Nat Cruzen informed our reporter that burglars made him a call last night but he scared them away.
