FARMERS CAPTURE ESCAPED CONVICT

Jefferson City, Mo.---O.L. Drydon, a convict who escaped from the penitentiary, did not enjoy his liberty long, for he is back in a prison cell.
Just how he managed to get over the prison wall is not quite clear, but presumably with the aid of a rope he had contrived out of wrapping twines. He traveled southeast of the city and crawled into a haystack on a farm some eighteen miles from here, and was discovered by some boys who were hunting rabbits. They gave the alarm and several farmers surrounded him with their guns and he at once surrendered.

OZARK BANDIT CAPTURED

Joplin, Mo., Feb 5---A lone bandit held up the Farmers' Bank of Butterfield, Barry County, yesterday, and fled with more than $800. He forced the cashier, Cass Jeffries, and his daughter, into the vault, but failed to lock it. The robber wore a handkerchief tied across his face, but Jeffries said he recognized him and gave citizens the name of a farmer of the vicinity.
Two hours after the robbery, Homer Bayless, a farmer, was taken into custody by a posse from Cassville. He was taken to jail there, where officers said $700 was found in his possession, after which, Bayless admitted the robbery.
Officers say Bayless told them he left a hack in the woods near Butterfield and after the robbery he drove to Cassville, six miles away, where he purchased groceries and obtained a haircut and shave. He was on his way to his farm when accosted.
" I was hard up and had to have money." Bayless said.
He is 30 years old and has a family. His father, A.P. Bayless, is a prominent farmer of the vicinity.
The robber forced the banker and his daughter to stand against the wall while he obtained the money. A man passed the bank during this time and hurried to a hardware store, where he told of the robbery and attempted to borrow a revolver. The hardware clerks would not believe his statement and refused to lend him a weapon.

FIERCE BATTLE WITH ROBBERS IN WEST END

Fiercely attacked by two highwaymen who attempted to rob him at Delmar boulevard and Aubert avenue late last night, George H Rodgers of No. 5047 Washington boulevard resisted with all his might until the footpads were frightened away by the approach of an officer.
In a running battle that followed, in which nearly 20 shots were fired, two men were arrested. They were later positively identified by Rodgers as the men who had attacked him.

The whole neighborhood for blocks around was thrown into almost a panic by the fusillade and a crowd of nearly a hundred persons gathered. Rodgers sustained several scalp wounds which are quite painful.

Rodgers was walking home from an evening call about 11:30 when he was assaulted at the corner of Delmar boulevard and Aubert avenue by two footpads who thrust revolvers in his face and commanded him to throw up his hands or be shot. Rodgers is something of an athlete and he decided not to yield without some battle.
Instead of throwing up his hands he rushed forward, knocking the gun of one man in the air and planted a blow on the thug's jaw. It staggered him.
While he was attending to the one man the other brought his revolver down on Rodgers' head with such force as to knock him to the pavement. Before he could rise the other highwayman dealt him another blow which slightly stunned him.

The two men continued to rain blows on his head until stopped by the approach of Policeman Neece, who had witnessed the struggle. At the approach of Neece the two highwaymen ran north on Aubert avenue to a vacant lot, crossing it to Euclid avenue, and thence north again to the Suburban tracks. Neece followed them, firing as fast as his revolver would work. The men turned several times and fired at Neece, who gave no heed to their shots.

The fusillade attracted the attention of Sergeant Long and Policeman Bartold, who met the fugitives at Euclid avenue and placed one of them under arrest. The second man was captured at Bayard avenue by Policemen Volk and Neece and placed under arrest.

Rodgers identified them as the ones who held him up. They were taken to the Tenth District Station. One man gave his name as Charles Williams of No. 1342 Cass avenue and said his partner's name was William Barrett, however, his partner gave his name as Frank Montgomery of 618 South Sixth street.

One man claimed to be a machinist and the other a clerk and that they have been out of work for the last few days.
Rodgers was taken to the office of Doctor P.G. Paugh who sewed up his wounds. He did not consider them serious.
