I would say he is more the uncle of MMA than the father, since there is no direct link to him creating MMA. Plus, Pankration and other martial arts of the past were often multi-faceted, it is just they usually ended up becoming very specialized in one area. MMA is merely the modern rebirth of hybrid martial arts.
However, that being said, Bruce Lee was far ahead of his time and his writings show that. He was talking about being trained in all of facets of fighting back in the 60s and 70s. There are even a few pictures of Bruce Lee practicing several types of arm locks and chokes as well. He was so far ahead of his time it isn't even funny.
Bruce Lee wouldn't make it in UFC, what's his ground game? BJJ? Wrestling? He was a great martial arts movie actor, I give you that.
what makes you think that. bruce had a little back ground in judo where he had some training under judo gene labell.
the thing that made bruce an amazing martial artist was not his style or technique but his philosophy of adaptation. he would surely have been the type of guy who would want to learn every aspect of the sport and learn it effectively. if he saw he needed a better ground game, or better wrestling, take down defense or what ever he would surely learn them, study them and undoubtedly mastered them. jean claude van damn was a movie actor, steven seagal was a movie actor but know that neither would have a career, and more then likely would have little to no exposure as martial artists if not for bruce lee.
go study the guy, read his books, dont just watch his movies to form an opinion or thought on the guy.

Jeet kune do contains both judo and submission wrestling. Stand up is a mix of heavily modified kung fu, boxing, MT, savate, karate, fencing principles and anything else that worked. What does that sound like to you? mma prehaps?
Granted the ground game was limited during his time, however if he was alive and in peak condition today you can guarantee he would have worked on this.
