Man the census is tearing Mobile apart, census now says the population is 183,200… a loss of 1,800, the most among Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile…. Birmingham only lost 1,000

I’m calling BS, but nothing can be done until 2030 census

Keep in mind that several large HUD developments have been taken offline and many folks that resided there moved to the county because there is not much vacancy in the city. In-fill development will stem the tide eventually, but the estimates still only show one side of the story. Census blocks elsewhere in the city will show gains... especially near downtown.

Yeah I fully assumed that part and knew that’s a huge part of the population loss, but I didn’t think anymore HUD were being destroyed/closing down from 2021-2022

But would it be enough to account for 1700 people?

-Thomas James Place has/had 796 units ("132 one-bedroom units, 463 two bedroom units, 197 three-bedroom units, 0 four-bedroom units, and 4 five-bedroom units")

-Taylor Plaza has/had 450 units ("144 one-bedroom, 68 two-bedroom, 198 three-bedroom, 28 four-bedroom, 12 five-bedroom. 6 approved non-dwelling units")

-Boykin Tower has/had 122 units ("98 one bedrooms, 12 one-bedroom handicapped units, and 13 two-bedrooms.")

These demolitions all started in 2022 according to Mobile Housing Board. That is just under 3,000 bedrooms. A modest 1.5 people per bedroom would take that to 4,500 easily.
