Yes, the photo was taken when he testified in front of the US senate.
He was one amazing Mutha ! I spent some time looking at the wikipedia page on him and was astounded. I have the Mothers Of Invention "Freak Out" cd and will listen to it today, the lyrics to "Trouble Coming Everyday" could have been written today by the content, very much like the Barry McGuire song "Eve Of Destruction".

Another thing about Zappa that lots of kids don't realise... he did NOT tolerate drugs or other lazy BS in his road crew. Get caught with a bong and you were out of a job on the spot. I didn't care for his stuff, but gotta respect the guy's brains and work ethic.

I saw him in San Diego and he ended the concert with a two hour non stop instrumental medley after a performance by Love (Arthur Lee), It's A Beautiful Day (remember White Bird), Sweetwater, a local LA band and Penrod (I had never heard of them) started the show. Zappa hardly said a word to the audience except at the beginning of his performance and it was something like "I'm going to play music and F U if you don't like it" He blended into his medley some of Arthur Lee's material.
The San Diego Sports Arena was new and had horrible acoustic properties for a concert. I Also saw Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin there in the same venue. Half the folks walked out on Led Zeppelin because they were way too loud but Jethro Tull was amazing. Maybe later if I feel like confessing I'll tell about sneaking into a Spirit concert.

J.Tull! Now that is something to brag about. I would have love to see Zepp but back in the day I might not have remembered it
Psst. Don't tell anyone but I took a sick day and saw AC/DC in Canada a few days back.
Still a bit of a rocker.

I miss all the free concerts in the summers I got to see when I lived on my 30 foot sloop. Sail all day with friends then anchor early in a good spot, Grill kabobs then watch the show.

Dylan,
Yes,
James Taylor,
Santana,
Chicago,
Emmy Lou Harris,
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band,
Mary Chapin Carpenter,
Linda Ronstadt,
and lots lots more.
That boat paid for itself just in concert ticket savings but you can see by the the photo having the sailboat had other fringe benefits if you know what I mean !

[laughing] Here I am goin' on 55 and what do I listen to all day long? darkwave and industrial. Funny thing, my tastes have shifted toward more punkish stuff as I've gotten older. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around

Yes I often chuckle to myself when I think of what music will be playing in the nursing homes in the future!
