But I didn't think it was fantastic.
Part of what made it work for me was the fact that Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have untrained voices, which in the story underscored their vulnerability and put the characters on a human scale. I think Chazelle did that on purpose to achieve that effect, and for me it worked.
I adore this film, and listen to the soundtrack all the time.
Another great film from Sean Baker, I guess Tangerine was not a fluke. Great performances all around, but especially Dafoe as I have never really seen him in this type of role.

Not to mention Starlet (2012) and Take out (2004). I hope this play here!
The Talented Mr. Ripley. I really enjoyed this movie as I watched it yet at the same time it's an oddly bland, forgettable movie. It's hard to recall any scenes or lines later on.
It’s a totally watchable movie but it’s not one where you’d remember movie quotes.
I think she's very talented, but I believe I've only seen her movies where she was nominated for an Academy Award....Winter's Bone, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Joy.
I didn't see Passengers, and I haven't seen any of the Hunger Games movies.
I had no desire to see Mother, although I did like Black Swan, and I do like Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfieffer.
Passengers and the first Hunger Games movie were fine. The sequels not so much. Joy didn’t work for me. I own it and only watched it once. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.
Michelle Pfeiffer was good a few years ago as DeNiro’s wife in The Family. For a fluff comedy, the movie has pretty strong acting.
I went in thinking it was a biopic (about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall). It isn't. It focuses only on one case, in 1941, and evidently it's not a very significant case. I'm not sure why the movie chose to focus on that one. Nevertheless, the movie showed what kind of character Marshall had and what kind of obstacles (such as blatant racism) he had to deal with. I enjoyed the movie, and Chadwick Boseman is always great to watch. I recommend for the history.
(It's also kind of interesting to think about Marshall in the same context of last summer's Hidden Figures, set 25 years later. In Hidden Figures, the racism is a little softened, but still overt. But the movies had very different tones. Marshall is dark/somber/serious. The subject matter is serious after all: the trial is for a black man accused of raping and then trying to kill his white socialite employer. Whereas Hidden Figures is bright/colorful/hopeful. It has a joyous quality, and even though the racism is there and apparent, you also get a sense of unity, in that the American people, across the spectrum, were so invested emotionally in the success of the space program.)

Man, it was trippy seeing those ancient (1990s) box-style computers with the DOS input, etc!
Went to an estate sale last weekend, bought a half dozen dvd's. Played the movie Lincoln, which came out a couple years ago. An outstanding film!
Thanks for the reminder - I hadn't see this, and the library had it and I just watched it. Daniel Day-Lewis was excellent.
