Okay I'm doing two polls in one day, and it is now 1964. No more 50's holdovers for the most part. As with all polls I list EVERY song that reached number 1, including songs that hit the top during the previous year and were still #1 in the coming year.

1964 is more crowded than the early 60's.

REMINDER:YOU CAN VOTE FOR AS MANY SONGS AS YOU WISH!

I voted for:
I Want to Hold Your Hand, the song that launched the Beatles and the British Invasion.
A Hard Days Night: I can't think anything more exuberant and upbeat than this song. Great opening and a awesome 12-string guitar
House of the Rising Sun: incredibly powerful tune, from Eric's singing to the moody guitars to the organ... WOW!
Where Did our Love Go: Classic embodiment of the Motown sound

Pretty Woman, I Get Around, I Feel Fine also deserve recognition, but i had to limit my votes somewhere.

Comparing it to the 63 list (which I liked) music really stepped it up in 64....

Yes, the sixties really began in 64.

I chose "I Feel Fine" as the best #1 song of 1964

Feedback intro
Fantastic riff, great "clean" metallic guitar tone (Lennon playing a acoustic/electric Gibson J-160e)
Great drumming by Ringo too, unconventional drum pattern.

A Hard Day's Night is also extremely good too.
Astounding opening Chord ...nobody is really sure exactly what it is ...G7 add 5 ...not sure...
Love the ..."When I'm home..." section chord sequence Bm to Em to Bm then G Em Am7 D
Another example of Lennon-McCartney inventive song writing....who's writing stuff like that today.
I hear a lot songs today with just 3 or 4 chords repeated over and over, verse and chorus,
no middle eight, boring.

Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman is great too.
Again killer riff and nice chord progression, strangely his last big hit.
Just about all his best songs were from 1960 to 1964.
Interestingly, when touring England in April 1963,
Roy was the headliner and The Beatles were the openers.
Beatlemania in Britain started on that tour and Roy asked if he could
switch and be the opener. Backstage on Roy's birthday (April 23rd),
the Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, had a cake made in the shape of a guitar
for Roy.
The Beatles were Oribson fans, Lennon wrote "Please Please Me" as a Roy Orbison type slow ballad,
but ended up sounding better at a faster rock tempo.

Some great choices by the Beatles, and I also like "House of the Rising Sun" and "Pretty Woman" as two of the best from that year.
