That's really cool! I had to look up that shrub. Didn't realize it's toxic, but hummingbirds can drink from it. So pretty. Have never seen a Northern Meadowlark. Will have to look up their call and listen to it. I love Western Meadowlarks. They hang out in the grasslands in New Mexico where I once lived. Such a pretty song.
The birds are so active in the yard now. This Northern Meadowlark must have a nest in the Carolina Jessamine, because he sits on top of the mailbox most of the day. He didn’t seem disturbed when we got our mail.
Right! Any bird that eats insects is a good bird. I wish all the birds in our yard would eat every single blasted chigger. Instead they peck at the tree or in the case of Robins only go after earthworms. Can you blame 'em?!
That reminds me I've got to go purchase some sulphur powder for the lawn. I've soon got to get militant about the annual chiggers, who are from hell. They are going to be here very soon.
They aren't "mean". Just like other members of that family (Icterids: blackbirds, grackles, bobolinks, orioles and cowbirds) they're strongly territorial. One of the reasons why they have such beautiful, pervasive songs. They aren't singing to please you. They're singing to warn you, competing males, and potential mates that there's a mature and robust male occupying that territory. Its a dog eat dog world out there OP. Being "nice" often isn't a very good survival tactic, not even for humans!

Bob, the local bobcat (lynx), is looking for breakfast.
