Sadly, I saw a skunk crossing the road today at a latitude where the ground should be covered in 2 feet of snow by now, and isn't covered by any. This is by far the latest in the year I have ever seen a skunk so far north.
Take refuge where you can, critters of Earth. Humans are turning up the heat.

We're doing a much better job than we were thirty, forty, fifty years ago.
I saw Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal today! I used to see them nearly every day until a severe thunderstorm this past summer caused them to move to a different evergreen tree of shrub. I could hear them, but rarely saw them.
I was really happy to see a squirrel running along a wire on the next block. It was Planet of the Cats here for a few years.
We saw a beautiful, sleek black bear the other day when we were hiking in a nearby state forest. She was up in a rocky cliff-like area, so maybe she just came out of her den to check things out. But it has been warmer than usual, so maybe she just hasn't gone into hibernation (torpor, actually) yet.

Reason: to correct hibernation to torpor.. thanks Parnassia!

Bears are not true hibernators. They do go through periods of torpor and often just nap through the worst weather events. If the weather is conducive to do a bit of foraging, they'll leave the den to do it.
this morning i went walking with my dogs.
the frost made it sound like Rice Krispies (snap, crackle, pop).
we did get close to a Pileated Woodpecker, which the locals
call the Good Lord Bird, since their loud calls startle some.
