The last 2 week has been horrendous going into NYC via PATH. I have not experienced overcrowdedness this bad while PATH trains were delayed in the morning.
The amount of people living around Newark to Jersey City probably increased several folds for platforms to get overcrowded in just 10mins of delay and 30mins delay became chaos at JSQ. I can't even imagine what Newport station is like with a tiny platform hardly enough standing room compare to avg NYC Subway stations.
If these developers keep stacking apt buildings without additional new trains or service into NYC, any bargain people gotten living in NJ will be spent on fighting crowds and delays.
Omg It was an absolute mad house this morning with NWK-WTC delayed by 10min the amount of people on BOTH sides of the entire platform had no more standing room!!
I moved out of JC back in 2009 and the Path trains were overcrowded even back then. I can't even imagine what it is like today.
Believe it or not I think it was worse back then. At least, it seems there are fewer “sardine can†rides now than back then on my commute from JSQ-33. PATH made some changes to squeeze out a little more capacity and it has helped. But as development continues we’ll see conditions get worse over time.
Today sucked. It was one of a long history of sucky days on mass transit in this country.
Right now, the PATH has to operate on all cylinders. They cannot have more than 10min delays on the PATH between 7-10am, that's when the tracks must be in full use or else the platforms cannot handle riders.
Now they are expanding platforms at Harrison but that won't solve the current problems. They can only carry a certain amount of cars.
The weather hasn't gotten above 90 yet, I remember in 06 or 08 when there were power outages on both NJT and PATH at the same time and temps were in the upper 90s it was the worst time to be a rider. And we didn't even have Uber around to carry people and taxis want $60+ to go from NJ Penn to NY Penn.

It's not a piece of cake to do all the construction they are doing while keeping a rail system operational. The two new substations are under construction, as well as the new signal system and the post-Sandy resiliency work. It is unrealistic to expect 100% performance.
Are there still ferry boats operating from Hoboken?
