There are over 50 towns in NJ that needs to be merged to a larger town. Not only for schools but services like police and fire dept. Every town also has an OEM. Do tiny towns need swat and bomb squad? When there's an adjcent town with a bigger police force. Total waste of taxpayer funds.
Same for children. We don't need 20 school districts within a 25 mi radius.
I agree with you on that point. However not all private schools are religious based. You could send your kid to Montclair Kimberly Academy for only 30K per year
Private school is not the answer. The NJ K-12 enrollment for 2018-2019 is 1,370,236. After grade 3 Montclair Kimberly cost goes up quite a bit from $30,320. This year there are around 1050 students in the entire MK school.
It's really interesting to see that (1) many of the better districts have relatively low spending per pupil and (2) Alpine and Saddle River spend tons notwithstanding having no high school (guess send/receive is marked up).
Doesn’t Alpine have to pay Tenafly per each student they send? Maybe that is why?

It makes perfect sense. Kids in those districts are smart to begin with. The district doesn't have to spend money on special ed programs, extra counselors, occupational therapists, special busing ("short buses"), security staff, etc. All of those special services are what drive up costs.
both the $32m and the $20m were referendums which were thankfully, each voted down. currently they are busy at work trying to repackage to make them more palatable. my hope is that we'll be long gone by the time they succeed.

I'll bet that they have all of those services, and that they're above average. Wealthy people have children with ADD, dyslexia, and motor skill developmental delays. After knee surgery, my son qualified for the short bus because it had a lift.

Every district needs special ed programs, counselors, TAs, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, security staff and more.
Just imagine our society's future if the Libertarians get their wish of abolishing public education...
Either pay private school tuition or go to school in a hut like in a rural third world village with no books or air conditioning with 100 students per teacher. Sounds like the libertarian wet dream.
Private schools are allowed to discriminate and teach "alternative facts" unlike public schools. It's not their inferior system, it's their inferior oversight that should not be funded with tax dollars. I'm entirely against any religious institution receiving any form of tax money, so using tax dollars to pay for Catholic schools is something that I and many others would never support.
and this is the kind of tyranny you get from government control and people feeling that they should control others because the government has taken money from people and now controls how it is spent. you arent everyone's parents and so you dont have the right to tell other people how to educate their children.
dont view this is spending tax dollars on religion; view it as allowing people to spend their own tax dollars on their preferred education for their children.
